About this Event
On Tuesday, 11 February, we celebrate Nancy Stark Smith’s birthday. In Nancy's honor, you are invited to do a Stand/Small Dance for 10 minutes at 9:00 am EST (UTC -5), wherever you are.
We invite you to face towards Florence, Massachusetts, USA, the place she called home for 30 years.
Simply stand, wherever you find yourself. Bring your attention to what is happening in your body; noticing the smallest shifts of your weight, in your breath, and in your connection to invisible, yet palpable things, such as gravity, the hum of the life force around and inside you, your connection to the others sharing this stand around the world—and Nancy.
Nancy Stark Smith (11 February, 1952–1 May, 2020) was a pioneer of Contact Improvisation and the originator of the Underscore.
"For me, dancing itself is a place—a portable country I carry with me, ready to be entered at any time, wherever I am, as often as possible.”
- Nancy Stark Smith, Contact Quarterly, Summer/Fall 2006
Happy Birthday, Nancy. We celebrate you daily!
