A very special concept: The festival was planned as a means of meeting between different communities of tango and their teachers, with the main purpose of exchanging and sharing what we love: tango. As tango artists, we have a wonderful opportunity to meet people throughout the world and bond with them, we are fortunate to have students become friends and many times we would like to find more opportunities to see them again. ARTIST 2013 LUCIANO BRIGANTE AND ALEJANDRA OROZCO (ARG / MEX) Direction and Production of Tango Maya Fest National and International Champions of Argentine Tango. 2° place in the world tango championship in salón 2004 representing Buenos Aires. 3° place in the Metropolitan Tango championship Buenos Aires Representing Club Sunderland With a career spanning over 13 years, they have achieved international fame for their elegance, dynamism and passion. Luciano is the principal dancer of the music video "Beautiful Heartache" directed by Mel Gibson. He is an authentic representative of the Villa Urquiza style and is internationally recognized for his precision, musical, elegance and their world famous "endless Pivots" Alejandra has been invited to perform exclusively for the kings of Jordan and Egypt. She has represented Argentina with the company EmoTango in the Beijing Olympics. She was first place in the national tango competitions of 2009 and 2011. Alejandra has received the award for the Best Stage Performer of Tango in 2008. She has toured around the world to countries including Argentina, Chile, Sweden, Norway, Finland, France, USA, China, Dubai, Jordan, Canada, Mexico, Germany and Austria. Alejandra and Luciano have directed tango academies in Germany, Mexico and USA. Also were invited because their are specialize in Enrosque and Turns "endless Pivots" in festival such as Tango Alchemy, Chicago Winter Dance 2010 and 2011, Chicago Tango fest 2010, Valentango 2013 and 2014. Their teaching method, based on 15 years of experience, is recognized as one of the most analytical, complete and effective. They are directors of Tango Entertainments, a production company of tango events. Currently, they are devoting their efforts to build and expand tango communities in different parts of the world, promoting unity, creativity and love of the tango culture. HERNAN PRIETO AND DANIELA ROIG (ARG/ ARG) Hernán Prieto was born into a family who loved the tango and instilled great respect for this beautiful dance from a very early age. He entered the world of jazz and modern dance as a teenager, as a member of the prestigious Noemi Coelho and Claudio Alves ballet. Hernan later studied contemporary dance with Gerardo Litvak and Ana Frenkel, two of the best known contemporary choreographers in Argentina. As a result of these vast and varied experiences, Hernan has developed his own unique and unquestionably distinctive style. Hernan chose to pursue a degree in teaching to pass on this enduring gift. The discovery of tango danza further fueled Hernan’s creativity. He studied with prominent dancers such as Horacio Godoy, Cecilia Garcia, Julio Balmaceda, Federico Naveira, Mariano Frumboli to name but a few. He is currently a tango teacher and performer at La Viruta Tango (oftentimes referred to as the most famous milonga in the world), and collaborates with Daniela Roig on La Viruta Por La Tarde. Together, they have provided countless shows and tango workshops throughout Argentina. On a typical day, you will find Hernan in the “tango classroom,” instructing up to 90 students. His smooth and accurate technique is admired by both students and peers alike. Daniela Roig likewise comes from a family of artists. At the tender age of five years, she entered the magical world of ballet and modern dance. Later, Daniela enrolled in the Escuela Nacional de Danzas N° 2 (the National School of Dance), and obtained a National Dance Teacher Degree in 2003. After graduation, she continued to dance under the tutelage of renowned dancers, Cristina Pelissa, Gerardo Litvak, Margarita Fernandez, Marisa Villar, Katy Gallo, among others. In 2000, Daniela took her first steps in tango with maestros Claudia Cárdenas and Amilcar Rodriguez. Daniela went on to perfect her tango skills with many great masters of the dance, including Horacio Godoy, Luis Solanas, Elina Ruiz, Cecilia García, Julio Balmaceda y Corina De la Rosa, Gustavo Naveira, “Chicho” Mariano Frúmboli, Andrea y José Manrique, Claudio Gonsalez y Melina Brufman. At the same time, she completed yet another teacher training course (this time in Pilates) with the Institute of Tamara Di Tella and also studied Yoga at the Institute of Yoga Kai. Teaching, it seems, is also Daniela’s calling. In addition to her vast academic experience, Daniela has also participated in several drama and dance theater workshops, including C.C. G.S M, Luis Solanas, Osvaldo Peluffo y Verónika Ayanz de Peluffo and has performed in several events, festivals and shows including: Espectáculos del C:I:E:E:D:A - Feria del Libro, performance in La Viruta tango, “Llora bandoneón” - Sahara Continent, in “Oye Chico” dancing with “Colonizados”, “La lujanera tango y ficción” - Teatro Velma Café. In 2011, she became a member of COMPAÑIA FÅRÖ and was cast in the show “JoSePhInE: DesterradaS. COMPAÑIA FÅRÖ. In 2004, Daniela began working as a tango instructor at La Viruta, where she continued to develop her skills under the watchful eye of experts Cecilia Troncoso, Horacio Godoy, and Luis Solanas. She currently organizes the early evening classes at La Viruta and provides regular yoga and Pilates classes at her aptly named studio, “Zero Stress.” Daniela and Hernan Prieto have been dancing together for years, and have performed in countless performances and workshops throughout Argentina. They are responsible for organizing La Viruta Por La Tarde, a popular afternoon class for tango dancers. Respected for her sublime elegance, but perhaps more importantly, her kindheartedness, Daniela enjoys teaching her students the important principle of “partner connection” and graceful stylistic techniques, including “flying” in the embrace and footwork. ROD RELUCIO AND JENNY TETERS (USA / USA) As an artist, musician, and Latin dance instructor for many years, Jenny found her true calling in dancing and sharing her understanding of tango. With athleticism and grace, she flows effortlessly through complex movements, always with a strong connection to the music and her partner. Her athletic background and focus on tango’s core movements combine delightfully to create a visually poetic expression of the music and her partner’s lead. Her years as a salsa dancer also contribute a distinctive flavor that is both engaging and entertaining. Jenny has worked with many of the traditional masters of tango in an effort to refine and develop her tango style. She then in turn works with many students and dedicates herself to helping them develop their own styles and become strong tango followers in their own rights. Her quiet encouragement and easy instruction have helped develop a new generation of talented tangueras in the Chicago area. Rod has been dancing all his life, and has performed in various venues around the states. Although his background has been mostly in hip hop and street dancing, he has fully committed himself to Argentine Tango. One can still see the lasting influence of his street dancing in his innovative and original tango style. It is also easy to see the coexistence of traditional tango movements and philosophy working in symmetry with a newer nontraditional influence, the end result of which is an eye-catching and entertaining performance. Rod has spent years studying with the masters in Buenos Aires and spends much of his time teaching in his native Chicago. His popular group classes are taught with humor and with an eye on encouraging and nurturing individual artistic styles while at the same time stressing the core movements and strong values of traditional tango. His infectious energy and love of the dance have created a large following of students in Chicago and the surrounding area. Jen and Rod started dancing together 3 years ago, and they annually go to Buenos Aires to train with world known teachers and dancers. By fusing their other background dance styles in their tango, it makes their dance quite unique. Their teaching in group and private classes have become very popular in Chicago. DANIELA ARCURI (ARG) TEACHER Daniela Arcuri grew up in the heart of Buenos Aires, where she absorbed the English, French, Spanish and mostly Italian influences that define the cosmopolitan "porteño" culture of this port city. At age thirteen, Daniela began training in ballet, modern dance, music, acting, jazz, argentinean folk dancing and gymnastics. She is a graduate of the Escuela Nacional de Danzas and Instituto Nacional de Gimnasia in Buenos Aires. She began to teach and choreograph tango at the age of twenty-five and developed the passion for the drama of the latin dances and cultures, recognizing that the Tango was her own artistic vocabulary.Her style developed as a result of her training both in ballet and modern-contemporary dance, and the influence and instruction from some of the great "milongueros" (the tango masters) of Club Almagro and Villa Urquiza of Buenos Aires such as Rodolfo Dinzel, Eduardo Arquimbau, Antonio Todaro, and Pepito Avellaneda and she years spent dancing and observing in the milongas of Buenos Aires. MARTIN PEREZ FOLKLORE Leading figure of Argentine folklore in Mexico, he comes from a family of tango artists, musicians, dancers and singers. With over 30 years experience, Martin Perez represents the strength, precision and explosiveness of the "malambo and boleadoras"( bowlers). His performances are always characterized by their great dynamism and high energy. THE LESSONS: Tango Maya is one of the few festivals whose main distinction is a teaching method focused on developing useful and effective movements for social environment. We will teach concepts applicable to the feeling of the milonga in order to maximize enjoyment--respecting codes of behavior, searching for more unity within the couple and musicality en the execution of steps.} THE MILONGAS During the festival there will be three milongas that are named after the most important Maya gods: gods of the wind, the moon and the universe. We will also have two practices that are led and assisted by the three teaching couples. Milonga 1 Ixchel Mayan Goddess of the Moon, wife of the sun, and, therefore, the creator deityrepresenting the love and protector of women. Milonga 2. "Kukulkan" "Feathered Serpent" and represented the God of Wind. Yucatan Contrails represent him with the air coming out of his mouth but the similarity to Quetzalcoatl Kukulcan of the Maya seems to be also considered one of the creators of the universe. Milonga 3 Hunab Ku: His name means "giver of movement and action," The one supreme god of the Mayan culture. They thought his heart and mind were in the center of the universe, and only through the sun could they communicate with him. He was the god that created the world and humanity. He built the world three times: the first was inhabited by geniuses, the second by dzolob (a black race) and the third by the Maya.
