Imagine pulling a prompt out of a hat that challenges you to discover new ways of movement through solo, interactive, inter-relational, and intergenerational inquiry. FAQs
What is this exactly?
Dance Roulette is a highly interactive intentional ceremony that slowly builds around creating group trust. This helps pave the way for surrender, healing, and personal breakthroughs.
No, really. What is this?
Participants pull a random prompt out of a hat, each one designed to invite you to discover new ways of movement through solo and interactive inquiry. Dances can last from one song to several songs - and there are opportunities to shake up your prompt with new prompts known as "restrictions." Ultimately with each round, participants go deeper into their emotional lives - providing them an opportunity for healing and connection.
Is this like improv theater?
While your dance can certainly be spontaneous and improvised, this isn't improv in the sense that there is no audience and no performance. All participants will be engaged in the dance at the same time.
Is this for professional dancers?
This workshop is for all people who love to dance, whether professional or not.
Who should come to Dance Roulette?
Dance Roulette is open to anyone who loves to dance, play, and discover new ways of relating to self and others.
Who should not come to Dance Roulette?
People who are not fully resourced emotionally, who are in the midst of a mental health crisis, or who are simply not ready to do deep inner emotional work should probably seek out other avenues to get the support they need. Additionally, people who have no education around consent should do that work first before coming to Dance Roulette.
How is this different from other freeform dance classes, i.e. Soul Motion, Ecstatic Dance, 5 Rhythms, etc.?
In many of these forms of dance, we’re encouraged to have “no agenda.” But with Dance Roulette, we’re invited to dance with an agenda. However, each person has something different and no one knows each other’s prompts. So there’s a level of mystery and permission that’s quite unique compared to other types of freeform dance. Dance Roulette has elements of Soul Motion and 5 Rhythms in that it explores alternate forms of movement and emotional expression, but is very different in how it gets participants to those explorations. Dance Roulette has an ethos of "no talking on the dance floor unless prompted" that is similar to these other modalities. No experience in any of these other dance forms is needed to participate in Dance Roulette.
Do I need to bring a partner?
You can come alone, with a partner, or a group of friends. There is no structured "partner dancing" - though there will be many opportunities to dance with others.
Can I enjoy a few drinks before to help me loosen up?
Please do not drink or do any mood-altering substances before attending. Dance Roulette encourages deep emotional exploration and requires sobriety for that kind of work - not only for your protection but also for the protection of all participants. If you smell like alcohol or are obviously intoxicated, you will be asked to leave the space.
Do I need to have taken your Blindfolded Contact Dance class to take Dance Roulette?
No - but it helps! Dance Roulette is available to all who love to dance - regardless of dance experience. All we ask is that you abide by our code of conduct, including rules of consent, and that you are emotionally resourced and resilient. That said, if you’ve taken our Blindfolded Contact workshop, it’s very helpful, as there might be opportunities to dance with those as well :)
