About this Event
Jack & Jill Competition
The competition is for amateur dancers at every level. The judging is based on connection, musicality, basic techniques, and floorcraft - Not Fancy Moves!
Up to 15 leads and 15 follows can sign up to compete
2 rounds:
Round 1 - will be 3 tango songs.
Round 2 - will be 3 songs, a vals, a milonga, and la cumparcita.
The leads and follows will be randomly paired up for the 1st round. They will get a score for the round, that score stays with each person and will be added to their score in round two.
For round 2 each person will be randomly paired with a new partner. They will get a score for this round and it will be added to their score from the first round.
The highest scores win.
Judging
There will be 2 judges using a point system for 4 categories.
Connection:
Are you present, paying attention to your partner? Does your embrace look/feel secure and comfortable? Are both of you able to dance with ease and fluidity, using the embrace to help each other dance better?
Technique:
Does your technique support your connection, musicality and floorcraft? The judges are looking for a level of technique commensurate with your dance: balance, axis, elegant walking--all count. (Hint: fancy moves are not technique! Even just walking can have excellent technique!)
Musicality:
1. Both the leader and follower contribute musically to the dance, so collaboration is a big part of musicality. Are you communicating with the music AND with your partner? Rather than imposing your dance on the music, are you letting the music create your dance?
2. The judges should be able to tell if you are dancing tango, milonga or vals, even without being able to hear the music: are you creating three distinct dances, or are you just dancing tango no matter what music is being played?
Floorcraft:
Traditionally, all of the dancers on the floor paid attention to the other dancers, maintained the line of dance, and remained behind the couple they started behind, and did not jump between lanes of dancers on the floor. Being able to dance well while respecting these guidelines shows a truly considerate, skilled couple!
