The music and dance as we know it today has both a rich and painful cultural history spanning more than 100 years from the slave trade to Cuba to the migration of musicians to New York City. Some major influences on what we call Salsa are: Guaracha, Guaguanćo, Son Cubano, DanzĂłn and Cha Cha Cha which we will explore in this class. Qualities of the original forms include when to dance to the music and how to interpret the rhythms based on rhythmic cues, compactness, dancing in smaller spaces, vertical posture, and smaller frame. 3:15 PM - 4:15 PM Intro to Afro Cuban Movements (Interpreting Orisha rhythms of the Bata) This class is designed to introduce students to different dance steps that are danced by the Orisha. We will apply the steps to different Bata rhythms for specific Orisha. In this class, we will explore why we hear the Orisha called in music and what we can take away because we may hear references to the deities in Salsa music and percussive rhythms associated with the different orishas. 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM Intro to Rumba GuaguancĂł Rumba is considered the pulse of Cuba’s most famous neighborhoods. From Matanzas to Havana the different flavors of Rumba are electric. Traditionally there are three styles of Rumba: YambĂș, GuaguancĂł and Columbia. GuaguancĂł used to be the last of the forms but the rhythms have evolved to Bata-Rumba and Rumba con timba and the latest form that has not settled on a name yet. The courtship dance is also evolving with the music. In this workshop we will explore the music of GuaguancĂł, how to dance and how the flavor can be added to your partner dancing. ************************************************************* About Energetic Soul: Duane Wrenn is the Creator and Director of Energetic Soul.
