About this Event
A weekend of dancing with Martin Hughes in November.
Over the weekend Martin will be exploring a deceptively simple premise: three, one-word instructions for dancing CI.
Simple but not easy. Simple to grasp and remember but, on investigation, these instructions require and cultivate a deep understanding of CI. Its fundamental principles, the practical skills, and even provide a neat improvisational score; all wrapped up in three words.
This workshop is for people with some CI experience. Participants will need to be comfortable with basic CI skills and be willing to engage their sense of humour and curiosity.
The weekend will incorporate an open class on Saturday morning and the regular jam on Sunday morning. Please see the separate posts about those. The Saturday afternoon will build on the material presented in class and the Sunday afternoon will rely on the people having had the jam experience and the Saturday sessions.
There will also be a performance on Saturday evening open to all. Please see the separate post about that.
A little about Martin...
Martin started learning CI in New York in the late 1980s where he was taught by some of the founders and the early “second generation” of CI practitioners. On returning to Australia in the early 90's he helped found the teaching and performing group State of Flux who started the Melbourne Jam and ran the first residential CI jams in Australia. With his wife Fiona Cook he also founded Cecil Street Studio, which for 21 years was a centre for improvisation in Melbourne. He has been lucky enough to teach CI all over Australia and elsewhere and in many different contexts.
For more than 30 years Martin has found CI fun, exciting and never-endingly interesting and he enjoys nothing more than sharing that fun and excitement and digging into the interest with others.
