JOSEPH DICENSO grew up in a family of drummers and at an early age was drawn to the piano. He studied classical piano and composition at the Hartt School of Music and then returned to his roots in jazz. As a longtime mover, Joseph feels enlivened exploring the interplay between improvisational dance and music, and the deep listening and responsiveness that animate both.
FUNDA GUL is an adventurous explorer of movement whose practice spans two decades of Aikido, Systema, Yoga, and Contact Improvisation. As a dancer, martial artist and teacher, she brings a deep curiosity about Center, Body Tonality, Fascia, and structural integrity into her dancing and teaching. Her approach is guided by โFunction Creates the Form,โ inviting students to explore how physical organization, intention, and relationship with surrounding forces shape movement. Drawing on her ongoing research into countering, recovery, and myofascial connections, Funda creates an adaptable practice that responds to each dancerโs unique needs and possibilities.

What happens when we change the quality of our body while staying in relationship with another person?
In this Contact Improvisation course, we will explore body tonality as a way of communicating through touch, weight, movement, and presence. Rather than thinking of the body as simply relaxed or tense, we will explore a spectrum of physical qualities and learn how subtle changes in tone can transform our dancing, movement, and weight.
Through individual explorations, partnered exercises, and open improvisation, we will investigate how muscular tone, skeletal support, breath, and attention influence the way we give and receive weight. We will play with softness and firmness, buoyancy and grounding, responsiveness and resistance, discovering how each quality creates different possibilities for connection.
The practice will also invite us to notice how our emotional and mental states affect our physical tone. Can we remain available without collapsing? Can we become more alive without becoming rigid? Can we change our tone in response to our partner while maintaining our own clarity and agency?
This course is an invitation to develop a more nuanced physical vocabulary for Contact Improvisation and to discover how the body can listen, speak, adapt, and communicate without words.
Open to all levels. No previous Contact Improvisation experience is required.
