Who are they? The organisers are Jonathan Teng, Natalie Stansfield and Kevin Malpas. 2. Which schools/studios do they represent? In terms of this competition? None. 3. Why are they putting this competition on? Jon, Natalie and Kevin decided that Adelaide could do with a fun, social freestyle dancing competition, to bring Adelaide’s social scene together and have a bit of fun. They want to draw attention to and promote the social dancing side of our scene, getting people out to different social nights and to enjoy Adelaide’s awesome social scene. 4. What are they getting out of this? Jon, Natalie and Kevin are passionate about the Adelaide Latin scene and are just happy to promote social Latin dancing in Adelaide. Profits and monies from this competition will be going straight back into the competition to make it bigger and better for the Adelaide dancers. So let's get pumped up, Adelaide – find a partner and start practising your social skills as we get ready to have a bit of fun, showcasing the hottest social freestyle dancing in Adelaide! ---------------------- ► General Competition Rules. 1. All competitors are entering with the understanding that this is a fun, social freestyle competition first and foremost. No costumes and no choreography required. 2. All competitors will enter under their own names and will only represent themselves, not schools or studios. This is a fun, social freestyle competition for the social dancers of Adelaide, not a competition between the schools and studios. 3. All competitors will pay the entry fee before competing. No entry fee, no competing. The entry fee is set at $10 per person (therefore $20 per couple). 4. All competitors will be considered of an equal status by the judges. Judges will not care if you are regarded as a professional, semi-professional or an amateur dancer. This is a fun, social freestyle competition and everyone is considered equal on the social floor. 5. There are no restrictions for gender in the couples dances - Salsa, Bachata, and Zouk. This means you can have Male/Female, Female/Female or Male/Male and either can be the lead or follow. ► Heats and Finals • HEATS 1. There will be 3 rounds of heats. 2. By the end of each three couples/competitors will be selected to go through to the final. 3. Heats and finals will be run with the same format, with competitors dancing to the chosen song one couple/soloist at a time. 4. If there are too many competitors for one heat, the heats will be broken up into two group heats and a semi final. The decision to hold one lot of heats over to the following week rests with the organisers and competitors will be given as much notice as possible if this situation arises. 5. If group heats are needed, then couples/soloists will be chosen at random to dance all together in a group heat, with the top three couples going on to the semi finals. 6. Each couple/soloist will be dance to a randomly selected song, which will be no longer than 2mins 30 seconds in length. • SEMI-FINALS (If required) 1. The top three couples/soloists will compete in a semi final; with the top couple/soloist from each semi final going on to the finals. 2. Competitors in the semi finals will dance to the chosen song one couple/soloist at a time. 3. Each couple/soloist will be dance to a randomly selected song, which will be no longer than 2mins 30 seconds in length. • FINALS 1. Competitors in the finals will dance to a chosen song one couple/soloist at a time. 2. The top couple/soloists will become Adelaide’s Best Social Dancer for their chosen style. 3. Each couple/soloist will be dance to a randomly selected song, which will be no longer than 3mins in length. ► Judging Criteria – All Categories 1. Timing • Salsa / Bachata a. Competitors can choose to break On1 or On2, but must maintain consistency for the duration of the routine. b. The direction of the break step can be either to the front or the back, as long as the timing of the break is consistently maintained (either 1 and 5, or 2 and 6). c. The routine should show recognisable Timing for the specific rhythm (Salsa, Bachata, Zouk). • Samba a. Competitors can choose to break back on 1 or on 5, but must maintain consistency for the duration of the routine. b. The routine should show recognisable Timing for the specific rhythm (Samba). 2. Connection & Presentation / Appearance a. Connection: Social dancing is all about connection with your partner, not just the music. Competitors should show connection between each other, but in the spirit of this competition should also keep the judges and the spectators in mind too. b. Presentation/Appearance: Even though this is not a competition where you are required to have a costume or choreography, we do want you to look presentable, neat and tidy – just as you would for a nice social night out dancing. No costumes or special outfits – just neat, casual wear. Show your dancing off and present your partner in a respectable manner. In addition, remember to show good sportsmanship to all other competitors. 3. Difficulty a. You will be judged on the difficulty of your dancing. This could include turn patterns, footwork, dips, tricks and musical awareness. Whether you are a professional or an amateur, we want to see you bust out your cool favourite moves and tricks. 4. Musicality a. Musicality is probably one of the most important things when you are social freestyling. This means listening to the music, dancing IN the music and being creative with you leading and following to highlight and express what you hear in the song. Everyone is different and hears the music/beats differently, so we want you to show us what you’re listening to by your moves and highlights. 5. Crowd Reaction – X-Factor / Fun Factor a. Social dancing and freestyle dancing is all about the fun factor. We want you to show us and the crowd that you and your partner are enjoying yourselves. Have fun, smile and show off a little bit... enjoy your time in the lime light. Judges will consider their personal reactions to each couples/competitors dance as well as the reactions from the spectators. ​6. Scoring a. Scores will be marked out of 100 total points. b. Each category is worth 20 points, meaning that each category carries 20% of the total. c. The Timing category shall start with a mark of 20, with judges removing one whole point for each infraction. ► Disputes 1. Disputes regarding points or placings are to be taken up with the event organisers in private at the time of the issue in question. Disputes will not be entertained after the night’s competition has finalised. 2. Disputes are to be discussed and in private and are not to be aired in public or on social media. If deemed necessary, a public statement will be made by the organisers. Publicly aired grievances will not be entertained or discussed.
