About this Event
CONTENT
Students will be introduced to the music and dance of Yambu, one of the three varieties of Rumba, the other two being Guaguanco and Columbia. Rumba is the national dance of Cuba and, together with Son, gave birth to Salsa. Salsa rhythms and movements are heavily influenced by Rumba. This workshop will demonstrate some of those connections. We will introduce the three conga (or tumbadora) parts known as salidor, segundo, and quinto, as well as rumba clave. Attendees will play the rhythms with instruments provided (you may also bring your own). Yambu uses the slowest tempo of the three rumba styles and incorporates movements feigning frailty, nurturing and flirtation. It is danced alone or in pairs.
