Interested in learning those groovy yet precise Afrobeats moves trending on TikTok and Instagram? You are in the right place! Get ready to learn some super fun, trendy, and classic Afrobeats movements that you can bring with you to show off at almost any occasion. In this drop-in class with Tina Singh, we will explore and break down Afrobeats movements from all over Africa, starting with the most basic movements before adding in all of the swag. We will combine movements into a mini-choreo sequence to music. There is no wrong or right way, we all have our own style, so come give it a try! Expect to grow your self-confidence in solo dancing :) Afrobeats is an extremely diverse, cosmopolitan mosaic of dance and musical influences from all over Africa, e.g., Azonto in Ghana, Shaku Shaku in Nigeria, X in South Africa, etc. It is impossible to pin down to a specific source, having incorporated moves and styles from a large number of dance crazes in Africa over the past 20-30 years. In the past decade, the popularity of Afrobeats and Afrobeats-inspired music has taken off in the global North, with artists like Drake, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, etc. producing Afrobeats singles. Meanwhile viral videos have brought the dance into the TikTok, Instagram, and Youtube feeds of just about everyone worldwide.
