AGUAS Carnaval- Samba, Rhythms and Instruments Workshop

Sambin’ Tas will introduce the Brazilian most popular genre rhythms also known as Samba. Samba is a Brazilian musical genre and dance style, with its roots in Africa via the West African slave trade and African religious traditions, particularly of Angola and the Congo, through the samba de roda genre of the northeastern state of Bahia, from which it derived. Although there were various forms of samba in Brazil in the form of various popular rhythms and regional dances that originated from drumming, samba as a music genre is seen as originally a musical expression of urban Rio de Janeiro, then the capital and largest city of Imperial Brazil. Sambin’Tas is a group of friends who met in Hobart 2 years ago, however, our friends have been in Australia representing samba and Brazilian popular music for years or even better since we were little. Each one of us came from different states of Brazil and our love for samba has no barriers. Since then, we are every day spreading our music around Hobart and connected to other communities to celebrate with joy and love our culture that has sailed for many years from Africa. As part of the 'AGUAS Carnaval', this workshop will participant in the showcase at MONA Lawns on Sunday 6th February 2022. ABOUT 'AGUAS Carnaval' 'AGUAS Carnaval' is funded by ARTS Tasmania with the Cultural and Community Cultural Development (CACD) grant and support by MCOT Multicultural Council; Clarence City Council, Kingborough City Council, and MONA. AGUAS (waters in Spanish) is a celebration of Water and Wetlands through art disciplines of Music, Dance and Muralism: the Latin Art Tripod. There are 8 workshops happening from 15 January to 5 February 2022 and a showcase of the workshops at MONA Lawns on the Sunday 6th February 2022.The artists' group involved are Beat Latina (Dance), Salsita (Dance), Latin Spring (Dance), Ikigai (Dance), Arauco Libre (Music), Baba Bruja (Music), Sambin Tas (Music) and Sarah Wells (Muralism). This is a COVID Safe event, your safety is our priority. You must: Check in using the Check in TAS QR code before entering the event. Wear a face mask whilst in the indoor areas of the event when not eating or drinking. Children under 12 years of age and people with a medical exemption or contraindication are not required. You are strongly encouraged to wear a face mask in the outdoor area of the event when not eating or drinking. You must not enter if you are experiencing COVID-19 or flu like symptoms. If we are not able to run the event as planned due to COVID-19 all ticket holders will receive a full refund.
