About this Event

Art of Improvisation Residency 11th Edition Arambol, Goa, India OUR VISION We see Contact Improvisation as a practice that is a revolution at the level of the skin. We look deeply into the origins of Contact Improvisation that understood the body as the intersection of physicality, attention, imagination, the social and the political, and therefore formed the underlying score of the practice as an inquiry into meeting in and through movement. As such, we recognize the critical importance of Contact Improvisation for both professional and non-professional dancers to expand the imagination and thinking of the moving body and to cultivate new ways of being together in motion. In InContact we are equally dedicated to embracing, understanding, and working within and beyond the Indian culture and social context. We envision the Art of Improvisation Residency to be a point of exchange, mutual learning that is rooted in India and engages with the “Western’ and “Eastern” dance worlds. This means: collaborating with Indian, Eastern Asian, and European/American teachers, actively supporting emerging Indian artists through artist fellowships, and reaching out to diverse Indian practitioners to be part of the residency. We are continuously evolving and integrity of the practice is at the core of our intention. THE PROGRAM The program of Art of Improvisation residency provides extended intensives with diverse teachers, who will share their different and unique approaches towards the art of Contact Improvisation and movement improvisation practices. The expertise of artists with background in Contact Improvisation, contemporary dance, somatic practices, and more provides a multitude of ways to enter the practice of improvisation. The Residency provides a solid structure of focused practice and open space for integration and individual process through laboratories, open studio space, and community jams. PART 1 1-6th Nov // Propelling Forward - Foundations of Contact Improvisation This part is dedicated especially to people who would like to visit its foundations of Contact Improvisation. We will start from working with communication through touch and sharpening the awareness of boundaries and consent. From this ground we will explore the skills of moving off-balance and with the shared weight, the pathways of spirals and inversions, and skills of sliding, rolling, falling, and flying. Teachers: Ayelet Yekutiel (Israel/Palestine), Kirti Verma (India), Lalit Ghanshyal (India), Pandurang Saghbor (India) PART 2 12-28th Nov // De-centering and Re-Centering - Advanced Skills Of Contact Improvisation In this part we see the more daring, grounded-kinetic, and momentum driven explorations of improvised movement as a possibility that can be explored when a ground is prepared through the training of attention, tuning in the senses, sharpening reflexes, building the physicality of skills, and learning to orient in disorientation. In this Part we will build on solo movement material and expand into duet and trio practice of negotiating and improvising the dance in-between falling, supporting, and flying. Teachers: Karen Nelson (US), Prashant More (India), Somya Kautia (India), Purnendra Meshram (India), PART 3 3-19th Dec // Dance of Listening - Somatic approach to CI This part will be grounded in the somatic principles that understand soma as an “integrated body”. We will look into Western and East Asian philosophies of movement with a dedication to the internal awareness of the moving body, sensitivity, and connection with the self, partner, group, and space. Teachers: Bari Kim (South Korea), Guru Suraj (India), Harmandeep Singh (India) MORE INFORMATION (prices, details) Detailed information about the prices, accommodation, program, etc. can be accessed on our website. https://incontact.co.in/events/aoi-2026 REGISTRATIONS ARE OPEN! https://incontact.co.in/events/aoi-2026 GET IN TOUCH [email protected] +91 9872366669 (Harman)
