ASIAFRICA FOUNDATION SOLIDARITY WITH JAPAN Fundraising for Japan victims With Afro-Rumba and Salsa Workshop in Nagoya and Kyoto 29 April / 2nd May 2011 Description In the wake of the recent disasters in Japan we all felt overwhelmed and humbled. Humanity is reminded that it is one and connected. For Africa, Japan has always been the most generous donor. Asia-Africa Foundation would like to express moral support, empathy and sympathy to Japanese victims and people. Our charity is now taking initiative to formally build a system to coordinate the African effort to assist the people of Japan. We also remember that Japan was the first Asian nation to open cultural windows on Africa by embracing Salsa and Afro-Rumba expressions. Three centuries ago, royal court dance steps, social celebrations, prayer forms, and worship rituals from Africa were transported to the Americas with the transatlantic journey. They were renamed, mixed and transformed into something different but still “African” in flavor. Japanese journalists discovered salsa in New York during the 1970’s. In 40 years Japan has brought the “salsa” experience to a unique level in Asia, with top dancers, renowned bands, researchers, and even rare books recognizing the origins of salsa in Africa. Objectives: The workshops are an invitation to a “spiritual journey” across distance, continents and time. I will explain some ritual African dance secrets and demonstrate how they inspired new expressions such as “Son”, “Mambo”, “Rumba”, “Patchanga” and “Salsa”. By the end of the workshop participants will be able to: Better understand Afro-based spirituality in salsa and rumba Execute body movements with relevance to the music Better recognize the “clave beats” Better perform shoulder isolation movements Develop better dance awareness Better coordinate upper and lower body movements Better release the freedom and express creativity Bring the Afro rumba and salsa dance to the next level. Charity: In the spirit of African solidarity with Japan, 30% of all proceeds for the workshop will be donated to Japanese victims through Japanese local organizations. He is a lawyer and university lecturer by profession. He was initiated to perform “sacred” dance steps that predated “Rumba” and “Salsa” and are still in practice today in Africa. Dr. Roland is now famous in Japan. He is renowned salsa international music and dance expert (DJ-Researcher-Columnist). He is the founder and owner of “Salsa Concept” (TM) and member of the International Dance Council CID-UNESCO.
