Soul Sessions Oslo & MUD Session Oslo present: HOUSE NIGHT at Soul Sessions Extended 2023, Friday October 6th at Sentralen, 20.00-01.00 No organized battle/competition, just jamming, exchanging and crazy good vibes with some real good music! After last year’s massive success with Mark de Clive-Lowe and Vanessa Freeman at House Night, SSO and MUD have partnered up to deliver the goods yet another time, while keeping the tradition of what we consider great music lit. This booking has been in the works since last year, and both SSO and MUD are excited, proud, and honored to welcome our House Night headliner: ATJAZZ (Martin Iveson). Atjazz being a well renowned producer, remixer, mixing and mastering engineer and independent record label owner. Sometimes referred to as wizard or brains in terms of his multi-faceted discipline towards music. Atjazz has been actively pushing original productions, countless remixes for over 20+ years, while highlighting up-and-coming talent on his own record label: Atjazz Record Company and other labels. Often celebrated for his timeless house signature sound, Atjazz’s music output stretches from Hip Hop, R&B, Neo-Soul, Broken Beat to a more experimental sound. Atjazz’s list of artist collaborations over the years has been extensive, among few highlights like: Amalia, At One, Boddhi Satva, Charles Webster, DJ Spen, Fred Everything, Gilles Peterson, Havana Cultura Band, Jimpster, Joey Negro, Julian Gomes, Karizma, Kerri Chandler, Kid Fonque, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Omar, Osunlade, Replife, Rocco Rodamaal, Sean McCabe, Shea Soul, Si Tew, Simbad, The Layabouts, Zaki Ibrahim, Zepherin Saint and the list goes on and on. Both Soul Sessions Oslo and MUD Session do appreciate the element of LIVE instrumentation. And so, to add more flare, fire, zest and organic touch to the evening, it’s our great honor to present Sidiki Camara. Sidiki Camara is a percussionist from Mali who has been residing in Norway since 2006. With his foundation in Mande music, he has introduced West African rhythms into the Norwegian and international jazz scene. Djembe and calabash are two of the most important instruments in Sidiki Camara's music. He uses the calabash as a bass drum, striking it with a clenched fist to produce a deep, rounded sound that often forms the pulse of the music. In addition to percussion instruments, he also plays melodic instruments like the balafon and the traditional string instrument ngoni, which is related to the more well-known kora. From the very beginning of his musical career, Camara was sought after by famous musicians from Mali such as Ali Farka Touré, Toumani Diabaté, Oumou Sangaré, and Habib Koité. Kicking off his musical voyage in 1995, he initially worked in the gaming industry, contributing sound designs for games like ‘Tomb Raider.’ However, his true passion lay in creating his unique blend of deep and soulful music. To pursue this, he founded Mantis Recordings, a label that would become a platform for his artistic vision. Over the years, his fan base expanded, solidifying his reputation as an innovator in genres like deep house, broken-beat, and nu-soul. His musical influence reached global proportions, notably capturing hearts in South Africa's vibrant house music scene. His accomplishments in this space earned him the title ‘Themba – Hope’ in the isiZulu language and an award for ‘Best International Producer’ at the Dance Music Awards South Africa. Despite the closure of Mantis Recordings due to industry shifts, Martin successfully rebranded himself through the Atjazz Record Company, or ARCo. The label has been a launchpad for experimenting with new styles and has facilitated numerous collaborations with other labels and artists globally. In addition to producing and running his label, Atjazz has shown a strong knack for mentorship. He actively nurtures rising talent in the music industry, carrying forward his love and expertise in music to a new generation. Furthermore, Martin has also started releasing music under his own name, aiming for a more introspective and soulful sound. In 2016, he commemorated his two-decade-long journey in the music world with a special compilation album featuring his early works. The album included a re-release of his 1998 debut, ‘That Something,’ adorned with artwork by renowned artist Fujio Akatsuka. Even today, he maintains a rigorous schedule as a world-class DJ, continually touring major cities across the globe. Throughout his career, Martin Iveson, aka Atjazz, has remained an enduring and adaptive figure in the independent dance music realm. His commitment to innovation, mentorship, and a relentless drive to explore new sonic terrains makes him a respected and influential mainstay in the global music scene. SIDIKI CAMARA: Sidiki Camara is regarded as one of the leading contemporary percussionists from Mali. He is also considered one of the founders of the modern current of Manding music. From early on in his musical career, he was sought after by the likes of Toumani Diabate, Oumou Sangare, and Habib Koite. He has travelled the world as a featured percussionist with the National Ballet of Mali. After leaving Mali he settled in Brussels where he has continued his brilliant career with stars of Malian music such as Mamady Keita, Gomma Percussion, Rokia Traore and Boubacar Traore. He has been a guest on European tours by Bill Frisells New Quartet and is a member of Frisells The Intercontinentals that also features Vinicius Cantuaria, Christos Govetas, Greg Leisz and Jenny Scheinman. Sidiki also teaches percussion and is the founder of the cultural exchange program Yankadi. MUD SESSIONS OSLO: MUD stands for Movement Undefined and started as an open ‘House session’ for movers across different backgrounds. MUD Session concept was born in New York and created by the female House dance crew MAWU back in 2009, and later brought to Norway, Oslo in 2015. Since then, MUD has been a common meeting ground where we share our spirit and love for House music, House dance and club culture. The concept mainly has its roots in house, disco, funk and boogie music genre, and aims to recreate the atmosphere that has existed in various clubs and underground scene in New York since the early 1980s. With us, we always have our resident DJs, DJ Ghar घर and DJ Niwin, who aim to take us on a musical journey. Our monthly sessions have moved through different venues in Oslo: Dansens Hus, Kyrre Texnæs Studio, Sentralen and Melahuset to mention a few.In addition, MUD is currently running through Oslo’s club circuit: Revolver, Blå, Ingensteds, Jaeger Oslo, Oslo Camping and SALT art & music.For more information, visit our Facebook or Instagram page. SOUL SESSIONS OSLO: Soul Sessions Oslo (SSO) is an organization that works to promote street and club dance culture in Norway. SSO organizes drug-free dance events like jams, free open-practices, battles and workshops. SSO aims to open up these wonderful subcultures to everyone -regardless of experience and age! The goal is to inspire dancers, DJs and other artists within the street and club genres, by providing a platform for exchange, self-training and development. SSO does this by inviting some of the foremost in their craft from Norway and abroad. This year marks the 14th edition of SSO’s yearly event: Soul Sessions Extended. Norway’s biggest street dance festival with battles, workshops, panel talks and parties.
