Bachata Social Dance + FREE Drop-In Beginner Class (21+)

Bachata music and dance originated in the Dominican Republic in the first half of the 1900’s as a combination of African, Indigenous Taino, and Spanish musical elements; it was also influenced by Bolero and Son. The music and dance were stewarded by the working class and marginalized communities of the D.R. despite heavy stigmatization and oppression under the Trujillo dictatorship. UNESCO has deemed Bachata an "intangible cultural heritage of humanity” which means that it “represents the living expressions of humanity—our shared traditions, skills, and practices—that connect us to our roots and shape the future of our diverse global community”. Bachata Dance consists of a basic lateral 8 count step that is communicated through either an open or closed frame hold in your dance partner connection. Complexity of the dance expression builds through learning solo and partner movement as you explore weight transfers, lower and upper body mechanics, step directionality patterns, step musicality, level changes, spins, rotations, and pivots. We primarily teach Moderna which can hold elements of a more ballroom frame and partner positioning, but we reference fundamental mechanics of Dominican Bachata, and sometimes fuse in sequences that are inspired by moves from other dances.
