About this Event

BECOMING AN EMPOWERED FOLLOWER This module is very special because it will aim to explore musicality, personality, technique and freedom on the dance floor. I want you to empower yourself with the right tools and open mind. To explore that I have invited two amazing Brazilian Zouk dancers who are full of expression and attitude in their dances. I’ve always been a follower who has something to say on the dance floor. It’s not about hijacking leaders but about freedom of expression and creating a space where we can both express ourselves and enjoy the music. Of course to achieve that we need the right tools and technique so here we go! 8 weeks module contains several topics: 1. Strong foundations, strong dancer (28 June) 2. Exploring arms alignment and styling (5 July) 3. Upper body technique and chest mobility (19 July) 4. Lower body technique (26 July) 5. Musicality with DJ Kakah (2 August) 6. Exploring head movements exits (9 August) 7. Boneca variations & arms styling in boneca (16 August) 8. Becoming a follower who speaks up (23 August) Julissa, a Washington DC native, began dancing Brazilian Zouk in 2016 after discovering the artform during her travels in Brazil. Prior to Zouk, she was formally trained for over a decade in classical ballet, and for several years in modern dance (Alexander Horton Technique). She developed her teaching skills with District Zouk, and taught nationally and internationally with Kuna, Gui, and her current partner, Kakah. Julissa’s teaching style prioritizes empowering followers to find their voice, unique style, and expression in the dance. Her own movement focuses on clean footwork, grounded technique, and fluidity and flow. DJ Kakah DJ Kakah is internationally known for her work with Brazilian Zouk and Bachata. She not only remixes songs but also produces original music for both dance styles. Her songs already surpass 15 million views across streaming platforms. A successful career that comes from years of training in music and dance. She has worked for various events all around Brazil including all of the major festivals in the country. Over the years she has also collaborated with a list of singers producing music for Brazilian Zouk and Kizomba. One of those songs attained a huge success reaching 350k views on Youtube in less than 2 months and became the most played hit in 2015. Aside from her work with music, Kakah dedicates herself into teaching new DJs/Producers in the creation of music and dancers into the art of Musicality. You can find her original work on Spotify, Itunes, Soundcloud and Youtube. Joanna Joanna Zwierzyńska is a professional dancer, dance instructor, choreographer, and actress. She has taught dance in over 30 countries, and has been teaching, performing, and dancing her heart out at international zouk festivals for over 10 years. She pioneered zouk in Poland in 2011 in Warsaw, and she is a qualified judge of the Brazilian Zouk Dance Council. She has taught zouk together with Pasty, Kamacho, and William dos Santos, and in recent years found success and immense pride in teaching popular solo follower classes at international festivals, attracting zoukers wanting to learn her unique and expressive style of dancing in order to enhance their partner dancing.
