About this Event

Join our beg. workshop and learn the wonderful Slow Balboa dance so you too can dance to very slow swing and jazz music. Zhan Li and Jon Bendtsen will give you a thorough introduction to the art of dancing gracefully to slow swing and jazz music. This workshop will of course follow the current Covid-19 restrictions so there will be no partner rotation, and you will thus need to signup and show up with your own partner. Registration system will be announced soon. Balboa is a partnered swing dance that originates from California and is almost 100 years old. Balboa can be both flashy and the subtle communication between the lead and follow: like weight shifts that most spectators cannot see. As a result, Balboa is considered more of a “dancer’s dance” than a “spectator’s dance”. This beginners workshop will aim at giving you and your partner a solid foundation for the subtle communication of leading and following with your body, because most of the time we will spend in close embrace, at or almost at chest to chest. For a non-dancer it will appear mostly as a rhythmical hugging session moving around on the floor. The base footwork rhythm is well known to other swing dancers: step, step, "tripple", step, step, "tripple"; but the workshop is also open for dancers with other partner dance experience. After this workshop you can continue with Slow Balboa every Thursday at hepcats.dk, and this workshop (or equivalent skills) is a pre-requisite for participating in the weekly classes. Shoes: It is a good idea to show up with indoor dance shoes that has a leather or similar slippery sole. It is common to see women dance in shoes with a thick 3-5 cm tall heel, but you do not have to do so.
