5 days Being Nature Retreat - Ecosomatics, Embodied Poetry, Contact Improvisation, with Dolores Dewhurst Marks
1 - 6 November 2023
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Being Nature is a project that encourages people to discover their own way of connecting with deeper self and the natural world. Inspiring them to feel nature as part of their body, and from that embodied understanding move towards change, with acknowledgement of the current environmental situation. Offering space for exploration, collaboration, artistic expression and environmental activism.
Learning about nature and the body experientially according to contemporary science. Emphasizing their corresponding imagery, logic and shared ecologies. Incorporating approaches from somatic and contemplative practices, contact improvisation, and body-mind centering.
Engaging artistically, including writing poetry, making performances and short poetic dance films with participants, in collaboration with videographers, photographers, poets, and movement researchers.

This retreat will center on the tangible and metaphoric conversation between stone & water. Discovering the silence and resilience inherent in stone, the fluency and perseverance implicit in water.
Their nature invites a dynamic dialogue within us, offering a vast landscape of meaning and experience. Connecting with these elements opens an integrative perspective in the bodymind we inhabit; bringing relational insights, expanded imagination, and wholeness to our expression in the life we dance together.
Encountering stone & water sensorially and poetically; anchoring our attention in the immediacy and listening beneath its surface.
Relating through our bones and fluids in touch based partner work and movement explorations. Embodying the elements' qualities and behaviors while in physical contact with each other. Witnessing and being witnessed while moving with nature. Giving space for contemplative writing and sharing.
Our practices will take place in the dance hall, the surrounding nature, and the swimming pool.
The retreat is open for all bodies and curious minds, with and without previous experience.
The schedule will consist of 3 sessions per day, plus morning practice. 1-2 sessions per day in the studio, 1 session per day in the pool and/or 1 sessions per day in the surrounding nature. In the evening we will have space for open exploration/score based contact improvisation jam.

Kaomai Lanna Hotel and Resort is a unique boutique accommodation on the route from Chiang Mai to Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand. Surrounded by a big, beautiful tropical garden in Chiang Mai, the resort features unique rooms converted from real tobacco curing barns and furnished with colonial style antique furniture.
50 years ago the tobacco industry in the northern part of Thailand reached its peak, and tobacco farms and curing barns flourished. But time passed and things changed. 30 years later other developments came; the tobacco curing barns faded from the northern part of Thailand, replaced by orchards and real-estate projects. Most of the barns were destroyed but it was decided that at least a few reminders from the old days should remain. So 18 old barns were converted into 36 lively guest rooms in a peaceful garden and became known as the charming Kaomai Lanna Resort.
Kaomai was awarded the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Conservation for New Design in Heritage Contexts in 2018, and continues its natural and architectural conservation works, while promoting and educating the public and the local community about our heritage through our sustainable tourism.
