Belabouring the Point
Exploring Work, Care and Time through Contact Improvisation
Facilitated by Daniel Mang and Eng Kai Er
Singapore, 1 May 2018
Join us on Labour Day for active resting and restful work. We will listen with our skin, speak through our bodies and negotiate boundaries. Through proprioception and touch we will attend to weight shifts in our own and others’ bodies, guiding us in ever-attentive waves of receiving, processing, and proposing ways of sharing weight and connection through space. We will engage with our working and resting bodies, through a mix of ideokinesis and improvisation scores, while also devoting time to reflections on: self-care, our working lives, and the wider systemic implications of structured employment.
All levels of experience and all kinds of bodies are welcome. No registration necessary, just show up. No one turned away for lack of funds. Donations are welcome!
Daniel Mang
Contact improvisation has been my primary movement practice since 1986. I have been teaching the form since 1990. I also practice aikido and am strongly influenced by the Feldenkrais method, Body Mind Centering and ideokinesis. My teaching is informed by my background as a professional bodyworker / physiotherapist, my studies in osteopathy, my experience with different approaches to communication, and by my politics. I see my interest in radical social theory and my love of contact improvisation as two aspects of the same desire. I am based in Sweden.
Eng Kai Er
I started dancing contact improvisation in Sweden in 2007, and have been organising, facilitating, and teaching contact improvisation in Singapore since 2014. I have a long term interest in dance, dance-like sports, the performing arts, and questions of freedom. Since December 2016 I have taken on the responsibility of running Make It Share It studio, where I organise contact improvisation jams and classes, life drawing sessions, and a monthly non-curated Open Stage platform for performing artists.
