Benny has become one of the Bay Area swing scene’s most trusted rhythm players — the drummer many bands call when they want time that feels musical, grounded, and alive. His playing is full of intelligence and rhythmic spark: crisp accents, playful ideas, deep swing feel, and a rare ability to make the drums converse with the melody. With Lullaby in Rhythm, Benny turns his focus to classic swing from the 1930s through the 1950s: the spacious, conversational swing associated with players like Papa Jo Jones, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Art Tatum, and Ben Webster. It’s music built on pulse, improvisation, and taste — swinging with ease, clarity, and plenty of propulsion. This week’s lineup features Marcy Keene on guitar, Kyle Athayde on piano, Clint Baker on bass, Smith Dobson on tenor sax, and Gavin Halloran on tenor sax — a seasoned group of musicians who know this language deeply.
