About this Event
A tango workshop for tango dancers who are curious about moving beyond familiar figures.
How often do you get the chance to question habitual movement patterns and discover new possibilities within your tango?
What happens when negotiating space becomes movement?
How might a familiar step feel if you approach it differently?
What if expanding your repertoire didn't mean copying another tango figure?
Tango Argentino has an incredibly rich movement language, and still, once we've learned its foundational vocabulary, it's easy to keep looking for new steps while moving in essentially the same ways.
This workshop takes a different approach.
We'll explore how ideas from other movement practices can open new possibilities inside tango.
The goal isn't to turn tango into something else, or to collect extravagant tricks, but to explore movement ideas beyond the usual tango vocabulary and investigate what they can bring into your dance.
We'll use movement exploration to question some of our habitual patterns and discover what else is already possible within the tango we know: different pathways, spirals, elasticity, momentum and ways of negotiating space can transform how familiar tango movements feel and look, way beyond what another figure adds to the equation.
You might discover multiple pathways in a familiar ocho and how it can have a completely different quality, that losing and recovering balance can become movement rather than a mistake, that connection can continue (and be enhanced) even when the movement doesn't look like a conventional tango figure.
We'll move between individual exploration, partner work and tango improvisation, bringing new movement ideas back into a recognizable tango context.

JESSICA GERDEL is a Venezuelan-Argentinean Tango Argentino certified teacher and movement researcher based in Vienna. Her work brings together tango, somatic awareness and movement exploration, with a particular focus on connection, adaptability and embodied learning.
Rather than treating tango as a collection of figures, Jessica explores the principles underneath them: how bodies organize movement, communicate intention, share the space and create something together in real time.
Her teaching is rooted in tango and somatic practices while remaining curious about other practices and questions that emerge when different movement languages meet.
You can learn more about her at jessicagerdel.com and find her on Instagram and Facebook as Abrazatango.
