About this Event

Want to level up your dancing and partnering skills? This is the first in a series of workshops to learn more about body mechanics and increase body awareness and alignment. This kind of work has literally transformed my dancing and I think it can transform yours too! (Hi, I'm Greg. I dance lindy hop, blues, bal folk, tango, and balboa. I am also very bad at kizomba, forro and WCS. I've been working on body mechanics with various teachers for several years now and I'd like to build up a community of people in Edinburgh who are as excited as I am to work on their partner dance through the lens of body mechanics. I'm not usually given to over-hypey event descriptions like this one, but I think it's worth making an exception) Through a variety of activities and exercises we will - learn about the structures that make up the pelvis and how different movements lead them to move in different ways - figure out where these structures are in our own bodies and how they move when we dance, using a spectrum of tools, ranging from our intuition, through our ability to imagine ourselves as dragons, to specific nerdy descriptions. - see how the pelvis is an essential part of grounding, both in our solo movement and in our ability to lead/follow our partner from the ground, up through our connection and back down to the ground - see how the pelvis plays a role in energy absorption/restitution and chains into various spirally movements that both prevent injury and allowing us to pulse more effortlessly - work on moving our pelvis effortlessly to create a variety of shapes (I used to feel super uncomfortable moving my pelvis and look rather... awkward. Thank heavens I was taught ways to improve on that!) Our work will apply to all partner dances (definitely those I'm familiar with). Your movement and partnering will see a variety of positive effects, both immediately and over the following weeks.
