BODY OF THE SHARED ACTION
Contact Improvisation workshop with Sasha Dodo and Dolores Dewhurst-Marks in Mae Rim, Chiang Mai, Thailand
20-23 December
10:00-12:30 workshop sessions;
12:30-12:45 fruits.
13:00-15:00 jam sessions (optional program).
Description:
The beauty of contact improvisation, in addition to it’s development of pervasive listening, bodily-relational intelligence and spatial awareness, consists of maintaining consciousness in a contemplative inquiring state, with a readiness to move towards any direction and find more and more alive questions, often bringing experiences that challenge well-established definitions of ‘body’ - ‘movement’ - ‘consciousness’.
This workshop is focused on being one body of action with a partner(s); mastering mutuality, dynamic support, spatial awareness and readiness to meet the constantly changing physical reality.
Investigating other ways of how we can be together, relate to each other and collaborate.
Opening the necessary conditions within ourselves to move towards the touch with curiosity and trust, so that the meetings can take place on such a deep level.
The workshop is a space of exploration in which it is possible to find greater confidence and clarity about developing one's own movement research in the field of Contact Improvisation, as well as the strength and enthusiasm to collaborate and improvise with others.
Note:
To join the workshop full attendance is required (4 sessions).
Workshop and Jams are open for all levels, no previous experience required, everybody welcome.
Jams are optional, and drop in is possible.
Each Jam will start with into-warm up facilitated by different teachers from the contact community: Nitipat Ong Pholchai, Artur Komarov and others. Jams are optional and will be open for people not participating in the workshop.

What is Contact Improvisation:
There are many ways of defining CI. Here are three definitions made by Steve Paxton (the originator of CI):
"Contact Improvisation is an evolving system of movement initiated in 1972 by American choreographer Steve Paxton. The improvised dance form is based on the communication between two moving bodies that are in physical contact and their combined relationship to the physical laws that govern their motion —gravity, momentum, inertia. The body, in order to open to these sensations, learns to release excess muscular tension and abandon a certain quality of willfulness to experience the natural flow of movement. Practice includes rolling, falling, being upside down, following a physical point of contact, supporting and giving weight to a partner.
Contact improvisations are spontaneous physical dialogues that range from stillness to highly energetic exchanges. Alertness is developed in order to work in an energetic state of physical disorientation, trusting in one's basic survival instincts. It is a free play with balance, self-correcting the wrong moves and reinforcing the right ones, bringing forth a physical/emotional truth about a shared moment of movement that leaves the participants informed, centered, and enlivened."
”The exigency of the form dictates a mode of movement which is relaxed, constantly aware and prepared, and onflowing. As a basic focus, the dancers remain in physical touch, mutually supportive and innovative, meditating upon the physical laws relating to their masses: gravity, momentum, inertia, and friction. They do not strive to achieve results, but rather, to meet the constantly changing physical reality with appropriate placement and energy.”
"The reason its called contact improvisation because there is a 3rd entity that arises in this state. Hopefully you get to a state of agreement between the two of you that neither one of you is leading. It doesn’t become leaderless, it is the two of you who are together leading."
