About this Event

Created in Rio de Janeiro's favelas in the early 1980's, Baile Funk is a music style that derived from the Miami Bass sound and it's main influence was the 1982 single Planet Rock by Africa Bambaaataa and Soul Force. This is not your father’s James Brown funk. But while this music is making its impact on the world, it is in danger of being censored at home in Brazil! Conservative government and religious forces are doing all they can to ban Carnaval and shut down nightclubs and LGBT events where Baile Funk music is played. If they get their way, it will be illegal to even play these tunes. This is unacceptable! Brasil Baile Funk is out to fight this censorship and keep the spirit of Baile Funk alive in Los Angeles. Born and raised in Rio, both DJ Potira and singer Leopold Nunan are going back to their roots to bring you a new night of funk at Hollywood’s Bronson Bar. “We want to spread the word about the latest culture, sound and attitude hailing from Rio – and the struggle it faces. We believe Baile Funk matches well with LA’s cool vibe, summer night outs, and the mix of ethinicities. We want to make everyone dance this summer”. 3 Brazilian forces and one Latin force join in for a night out in Rio! Dj Potira, performance artist Leopold Nunan AKA Leo from Rio, Live Samba drumming group, Samba Da Mudanca and NiÑo François are performing together at the new edition of Brasil Baile Funk. We are going to fuse drums with DJs and vocals all LIVE on the dance floor. Guest Dancers: Abraham and Blanameño Plus: Photo by Feneco 21+ No Cover.
