Brasil Baile Funk, The party, featuring Rio de Janeiro's sexiest most popular music genre. Will run every second Sartuday of the month at Bronson bar. The contagious rhythm of this party encourages even wallflowers to get on the dance floor and shake their hips, swaying with the raucous crowd. Baile Funk, also called Funk Carioca, is a musical style originated in Rio de Janeiro's favelas, the city's slums, in the early 1980's - and it's very different from the funk eternalized by James Brown. The rhythm was once direct derivative of Miami bass and had as its main influence the single Planet Rock of Africa Bambaaataa and Soul Force, launched in 1982. Despite the American impact, Baile Funk quickly became a genuine expression of Rio's social issues that burdens the poor and the black people in Brazil, including controversial topics such as drugs, violence, and strong sex appeal. Born Carlos de Oliveira, Carlinhos grew up in Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s. He was immersed in samba, a style of music with roots in both Africa and Portugal. Its most famous expression is in the poor and working-class neighborhoods surrounding Rio, called favelas, which host performing associations known as samba schools. These groups compete every year in Rio’s spectacular Carnaval parade, with thousands of dancers in feathered costumes and hundreds of drummers playing samba rhythms. One drum that can perform all the rhythms of the samba is Brazil’s national instrument, the pandeiro. (The pandeiro is a tunable tambourine, played with a different technique than in North American music.) Carlinhos took up the pandeiro at age seven, starting with one of his mother’s cake pans. He visited the favelas to absorb samba styles, particularly at one of the greatest samba schools, GRES Estação Primeira de Mangueira. Carlinhos would join in during rehearsals, and he soon came to the attention of Mangueira’s legendary singer, Jamelão, who invited Carlinhos to become a performing member of Mangueira, a high honor. Carlinhos’s pandeiro playing became quite theatrical, with unprecedented juggling and stunts (known as malabarismo). This formative experience set him on a path towards the aspiration of dancing and designing unique feathered costumes for men and woman. In addition to his creative costume making abilities, Sydney Maria is a choreographer, model, actor and dancer. He has produced many stage shows, samba shows and festivals in TV and in person.
