C4K has officially been running for a whole year, which means it's time to celebrate!! 🥳 The theme for this weekend: Kizomba meets Urban Kiz! Kizomba is a partner dance and musical genre that developed in Angola in the 80s. Kizomba is the adaptation of Semba, another Angolan dance, to a the musical blending of Semba, Caribbean Zouk, and other genres into what we now call Kizomba. For those unfamiliar, both dances bear resemblance to another walking-style dance: Tango. Similarly, Kizomba is danced in a close embrace-some would say like a hug- with an emphasis on smooth, grounded steps and synchronized movements between partners. The dance is cruisey, with occasional bouts of play in the form of footwork, leans, and breakaways. Urban Kiz is a younger derivative of Kizomba developed largely in France, coming into development in the early 00s before officially being titled "Urban Kiz" in 2015. This style was created by exploring Kizomba dance through the lens of Hip Hop, RB, Ghettozouk-inspired music- with time absorbing principles from other dances such as Hip Hop, Tango, and Tarraxinha. The end result is a sharp, dynamic dance that easily shifts between soft, slow movements and accelerations and breaks. This weekend we will mostly focus on the similarities and differences between Kizomba and Urban, how to switch between them, and the types of music you'd dance them to. After the workshops, dance away to a variety of music from Afrobeats to Kizomba to Salsa to Zouk!
