About this Event
We’re hosting a full day of Contact Improv in Tulsa with guest artist Brandin Steffensen. Underscore, talk-through, CI class, Jam, pot luck hot tub social dance.
Registration is online only by the form at the ticket link and at www.tummdance.org (click the RSVP button). You must RSVP to receive the address for the social.
The practice of Contact Improv will teach you to listen to your body and learn from it's wisdom while following a shared point of contact with another mover. In a short class, Ari will teach specific body movement patterns that increase our awareness and enhance flow in the body so that we can be safe, creative, and resilient in our living dance. Immediately following class, Ari will lead us into a jam.
The Underscore is a dance improvisation structure developed by Nancy Stark Smith. Based in Contact Improvisation, it comprises a spectrum of states, from quiet, internal activity to high-energy, interactive dancing. Undirected; for research and play. Open to all familiar with CI. Brandin will take us through a "talk-through" of the Underscore to introduce Underscore's 50+ glyphs and concepts. Important Note: Stay from start to finish.
PLEASE NOTE: The talk-through (at 10:00 am) is mandatory for participation in the Underscore (as a condition by Nancy Stark Smith, the form's creator); the Underscore is best suited for people with at least a little bit of CI experience. It is by design that the Underscore doesn't immediately follow the talk-through.
It's okay to attend the CI Jam late or leave early, the class is included in the price, but it's not required. (12-1:00 class, 1-2:30 jam). In contrast, it's expected that you'll start on-time and stay present for the duration of the Underscore.

10:00-11:30 Underscore talk-through with Brandin Steffensen // Nathan Hale Library
12:00-1:00 Class: CI Fundamentals with Ari Christopher // Temple of Dance

Brandin Steffensen is an adjunct lecturer for University of Oklahoma School of Dance. He has a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah and an MFA in Dance from the University of Washington. His Contact Improvisation practice began in 1997. He met Nancy Stark Smith in 2008 and began a long mentorship with her. This culminated in "The Glimpse Series, Performance installations of the Underscore." His dances, based on archetypical modes of relating, have been presented at venues including The New Museum, Dance Theater Workshop, La MaMa, and The Tank, among others. His work with Deborah Hay, Liz Gerring Dance Company, and Keely Garfield Dance influence his approach as a dance maker as does his research with the late Nancy Stark Smith. His process is also informed by his work and performance in Punchdrunk's immersive physical theater production Sleep No More.
