About this Event
CIRCLE PLAY is a retreat that focuses on the art of improvisation through music, movement, acting, and human connection. No previous experience is necessary, we just want people that are willing to be open and play! We value presence in the moment, and we work mostly with the power of voice and creative thinking in unique and exploratory environments. Come discover and practice vocal techniques, rhythmic elements, ecstatic dancing and circle singing in safe and conscious playgrounds. Through different dynamics, games and exercises, we explore the potential of human expression and emotional connection, being aware of ourselves and our surroundings while interacting with the elements.

RIZUMIK is an award-winning artist born in Lisbon, Portugal, and mostly known for his rhythmic and improvisational skills. He connects to playing, acting, singing, dancing and teaching - mostly through beatbox, percussion and vocal improvisation. His rhythmic skills also include tap dance, body percussion, drum kits and performance with percussion syllables ("Konnakol" style).
Rizumik is part of the faculty of the Circlesongs course, at Omega Institute, teaching and collaborating alongside 10 time Grammy-Award winner Bobby McFerrin. He's been focusing on facilitating his own techniques and methods within his work of improvisation, circle singing and “playshops” - experiential guided journeys that involve dancing, singing, meditation and human connection.
He was the lead in the internationally acclaimed show The Voca People, having performed on Off-Broadway (West Side Theatre and New World Stages) and around the world, for many years. The production won the 2012 Lucile Lortel Award for Outstanding Alternative Theatrical Experience, and it was featured in many shows like "Live With Kelly", "The Wendy Williams Show", "MDA Telethon" and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". Rizumik won “Best Vocal Percussion” at the 2017 Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella competition, in NY; He is the 2012 American Beatbox Champion, and has participated in three editions of the Beatbox Battle World Championship, in Berlin (2009, 2012 and 2015). In 2008, he was also the winner of the music prize "Jovens Criadores", in Portugal, with his vocal project aCorda.
Throughout the years, Rizumik has been part of many different endeavors, and has participated and collaborated in many albums, events, and shows around the world. He's been part of some A Cappella projects and has utilized his talents in concerts, open mic sessions, private classes, workshops and circle singing sessions for schools and institutions, sound journeys, meditations, dance gatherings, yoga classes and sacred / shamanic ceremonies, He mostly thrives in improvisation, humor, and movement - following the spirit of "Lila", the divine play - and he firmly believes in a spiritual and sacred approach to music practice and healing through sound. Being open and present to the moment, our bodies, and our creativity means that we can explore music (and the world) and connect with each other in a deeper and more pleasurable way. www.rizumik.com
