Class description
What is a relation? Are they symmetrical or necessarily unbalanced? Can relations be fruitful even though communication might seem impossible? Can we learn from others - animals, things, spirits - through other means - intimacy, touch, entanglement, time or letting go? This class explores our relationship with ourselves, each other, and the body as a material. It is made of a warm-up with movement principles like pushing & falling, and shifting weight, followed by group improvisation practice and research in pairs. With a playful approach to contact improvisation, we'll dance with our ancestors, and our past and future selves. We'll dance with each other to materialize the unseen, to play in fantastical worlds of information and connections. This class is part of an ongoing research project that uses dance to explore connections across species.
About the Facilitator:
Hana Lee Erdman is an artist, teacher and researcher working within the field of dance and choreography. Central in her work is the notion of companionship as an orientation and organizing principle, with which she explores the connection between thought, movement and energy, as well as our relationship to environment and more-than-human creatures. Her work is presented internationally in a variety of contexts and spans a wide range of disciplines; namely dance, performance, social choreography, installation, video and sound. Recent works include COMPANION (2022), FORRESTS, FIELDS AND PASTURES (2021), and THE WEATHER IN THE ROOM (2021). She studied Art History at UCLA and has a Masters Diploma in Dance and Authorship from HZT, Universität der Künste Berlin.

[Accessibility]
Being in the upstairs dance loft at Soft Medicine, we want to let folks know there is also an elevator at the back of the building, for anyone who needs that to get to the 2nd floor (though it involves considerably more walking).
This is an indoor venue. Masks are optional.
Anyone under age 18 is asked to attend with a guardian, and/or email us first to discuss.
[Request re: clothing]
If you are prone to saturating your clothes with sweat while dancing, please bring 1 or 2 changes of clothes - for the consideration of others.
[Music]
Sometimes the jam will have some pre-recorded music, sometimes live musicians (know of some?), sometimes we'll make sounds ourselves and some of the time it will be silent. Classically, CI has been done in total silence, and even when there is music, the emphasis is not on how it moves us.
