-- CLASS DESCRIPTION --
Cranio-Sacral Contact
This class is a playful and somatic inquiry on movement that is born from the spine. By awakening the connection between head and tail aka craniosacral, we will breathe, move and be moved with focus on our spine. Join us to develop more fluidity, ease, and pleasure in your dance.
-- CLASS FACILITATOR --
João started improvising in contact in the mid 2000's in their homeland, Brazil, and has been exploring and sharing somatic movement for over 20 years. Finding playful and attuned ways to instill a 'less ambition, more curiosity' mindset in other dancers is João's greatest inspiration. Their dance and teachings are greatly influenced by their bodywork practice and aquatic investigations. Learn more about them at www.basayoga.com
-- LIVE MUSIC --
Alexander Karvelas is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist drawing on over fifteen years of disciplined study of Middle Eastern and North Indian traditions. He completed his PhD in music at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he specialized in ecomusicology (the study of sound in and as environment), North Indian Classical raga, and Middle Eastern maqam. Both in his scholarship and his musicianship, Alexander seeks to weave together kindred textures, seeking points of historical, aesthetic, and ecological convergence and building musical-cultural bridges across time, place, and memory. He has recorded, performed, and collaborated extensively with multiple acoustic and electronic projects including Mah ze Tar, Nyrus, Soohan, Peace Sine, Donya Reeza, and is currently working on his first full length solo album as Dros, set to release in the winter of 2024. In all contexts Alexander strives to cultivate his art and his self as a vessel for music, memory, and movement, and the lineages of ecstatic expression that dwell and delight in these realms.

For the "soundscape" at other jams....
sometimes we'll play some pre-recorded music, sometimes we'll make sounds ourselves and sometimes it will be silent. Classically, CI has been done in total silence, so even when there is music, the emphasis is not on how it "moves us".
Do you know of folks who are proficient in improvising music for movement? Send their info our way!
