Class: Tectonic Footwork with Marcus van Duren + Jam June 5th

~June 5th ~ CLASS 6-7:30pm JAM 7:30-9pm -- START TIME -- Class starts promptly at 6pm, so please arrive before to allow time for check-in. -- ENTRANCE FEE -- $20 for the whole night, whether you go to the class and/or jam. -- FINANCIAL ACCESSIBILITY -- A discount of 50% is available for marginalized peoples, such as BIPOC and LGTBQIA+ folx and those who are experiencing financial hardship..... or pay what you can; NOTAFLOF. -- CLASS DESCRIPTION -- Tectonic Footwork Perhaps you’ve done some rolling point standing up or some rolling around on the floor but how do we go between the two? In this class I seek to demystify in between. We will explore the importance of foot placement in maintaining shared weight through dynamic level changes. The importance of the “center connection” will also be central to this class. Together we will go on a journey from self to ensemble, from rigor to rambunctious play. -- CLASS INSTRUCTOR -- Marcus van Duren is a dancer, teacher and community organizer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Marcus has intensively studied movement and dance since his discovery of contact improvisation in 2012. Shortly after, Marcus delved into contemporary dance and the invaluable information of the Axis Syllabus. Marcus has had the privilege of studying with Kira Kirsch, Frey Faust, Nuria Bowart, Chris Aiken, Angie Hauser, Kathleen Hermesdorf, Martin Keogh, Ray Chung, Nita Little, James Graham, Sarah Shelton Mann and many others. Marcus has been teaching classes and workshops locally in California since 2015, and seasonally travels internationally to teach at festivals and practice. In his teaching, Marcus seeks to marry technique and play in a way that leaves students with a felt sense of essential principles and gives them jumping off points for further research. Marcus holds an interdisciplinary BA from UC Berkeley with a focus in Theater, Dance & Performance. -- MUSIC -- Sometimes the jam will have some pre-recorded music, sometimes we'll make sounds ourselves and sometimes it will be silent. Classically, CI has been done in total silence, and even when there is music, the emphasis is not on how it "moves us". Do you know of someone proficient in improvising music? Send their info our way. -- CLOTHING REQUEST -- If you are prone to saturating your clothes with sweat while dancing, please bring 1 or 2 changes of clothes - for the consideration of others. Please don't wear strong fragrances. -- SPACE ACCESSIBILITY -- The movement space is on the 2nd floor, accessible by the stairs or via an elevator in the back of the building.
