Collegiate Shag and Balboa Crash Course

Come join us for an really fun day filled with Collegiate Shag and Balboa lessons. Both Shag classes will be taught by Julie Roman, National Jitterbug Champion and incredible dancer and dance teacher. Learn Balboa fundamentals with Steve Conrad, founder of the Arizona Lindy Hop Society and dance teacher for nearly 30 years. Beginners welcome! We will start off with two collegiate shag lessons from 1:00-1:50pm and then 2:00-2:50pm with with hot tea and snacks in between before a balboa class at 3:15pm, NRG Ballroom - 931 E Elliot Rd., Tempe (Rural and Elliot) 1pm: Collegiate Shag Fundamentals 2pm: Collegiate Shag beyond fundamentals Note: If advance Shag dancers join the class, there will be two classes at 2pm, one to take those new to the dance into it a bit further (with Steve Conrad) and one for more advanced Shag dancers (with Julie Roman) 2:50pm-3:15: Enjoy tea time with hot teas, snacks, finger foods, and chocolates and an open dance floor with swing music playing 3:15pm-4:15: Balboa Fundamentals with Steve Conrad Complimentary hot teas, food, and drinks included. $39 for whole workshop - all three classes and all food and drinks included. A La Carte: $15 per person, $10 for students with ID (AZ Lindy class cards accepted). No Partner needed. All ages are welcome About instructors: Julie Roman is a Phoenix-based artist. As a classically trained concert pianist/vocalist (with a career as a certified music educator and private vocal coach), she is passionate about pursuing excellence and spreading a love for the arts. She enjoys collaborating with vintage swing dancers from around the world to compete, teach, choreograph, and perform. While she studies and competes with as many Jazz dances as she can, Julie is madly in love with Collegiate Shag (and flying aerials). She has made finals, placed in, or won contests at Shag events such as the Warsaw Shag Festival, the Barcelona Shag Festival, Camp Hollywood, Shag and Drag, the LA Shag Festival, and Hot Rhythm Holiday. Julie has performed with or directed several Phoenix-based teams including the Rain and Shine Shufflers (Balboa), The Phoenix Bomb Squad (Lindy Hop), The Phoenix Fleahoppers (Shag), The Phoenix Firecrackers (junior Lindy Hop), the Salty Dogs (Solo Jazz), and the Gypsy Jitterbugs (Solo Jazz). Steve Conrad has been teaching Lindy Hop, Balboa, Shag, and more for nearly 30 years. He has traveled around the world teaching with tours across the US, Europe, and China. Steve was featured on ABC's "The Bachelorette", HGTV's "House Hunters", Arizona Highways TV, and NBC's "Little Big Shots: Forever Young". Steve also helped lead a pilot program for teaching ballroom dance to people experiencing homelessness at the Human Services Campus in Phoenix and has used dance as a healing modality for children in the foster care system by teaching for Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona. In 2021, Phoenix mayor Kate Gallego declared April 29th "Steve Conrad Day" for his contribution to dance and the arts in Phoenix
