About this Event
Come join us for a community dialogue with Heyni Solera before our Matinee Milonga.
From Golden Age Recordings to the Milonga: A Dialogue on the Art, Effort, and Future of Live Tango
Ever wonder what it takes to bring a living, breathing tango orchestra to our milonga? Behind the magic of every live chord is a massive, collective puzzle: thousands of hours spent by musicians polishing their craft, writing grants, running fundraising campaigns, flying in guest musicians, and spending countless hours transcribing historical audio to rebuild lost scores.
Because live music takes a village, this isn't just a presentation—it is a community dialogue, and we want you at the table.
Join us this Sunday before the milonga for a two-part event dedicated to the past, present, and future of live tango. We will kick off with an illuminating 45-minute presentation by ethnomusicologist and ensemble director Heyni Solera on the fascinating world of the orquesta escuela model.
Immediately following the talk, we are opening the floor for a 30-minute interactive community town hall featuring our ensemble director, our president, and our executive director.
This is your space to share your feedback and voice your preferences. Come pull back the curtain with us, tell us what you love, share your ideas for the future, and learn how we can keep live music thriving on our dance floor—together.
About Heyni's presentation:
The Orquesta Escuela: How Decoding the Masters and Transcribing the Past Educated a New Generation of Tango Musicians
In this community talk, ethnomusicologist and bandoneonist Heyni Solera will explore the multi-faceted history of the 21st-century tango renaissance through the lens of the orquesta escuela (orchestra school) model. Following the golden age, tango faced a massive pedagogical rupture, leaving a generation of modern musicians with few written records or fully realized scores. This lecture traces how the orquesta escuela movement bridged that historical gap by establishing a rigorous practice of reverse-engineering and transcribing historical audio recordings. Attendees will discover how decoding the intricate articulations, weight, and stylistic nuances of the old masters transformed transcription from a basic tool into the ultimate textbook for today's musicians—giving a global community of tangueros the foundational vocabulary required to move from preserving history to creating entirely new contemporary arrangements.
Stay after the talk and dance with us!
Our goal is to create a welcoming, affirming, and fun dance space where all levels can participate. and dance with us!
