Shared Scapes
Daniel Stern's work on affect attunement in mother-child interactions has been an important source of inspiration for Steve Paxton and the development of Contact Improvisation. By finely studying these interactions, thanks to video and the slow motion that it allowed, D. Stern proposed to rethink the mother-child relationship in a dynamic way through the concept of "vitality affect", which we could translate as " the affective temporal shape of shared experience ". The mother-child relationship (as proposed by S.Paxton in "Nothing come to mind") is a multimodal experience: "Face, color shape, texture ... Voice, smell, food, Mom, a multimedia experience"
This "multimedia" experience is the terrain, the landscape (scape) of the mother-child relationship, and contains a potential of actions to be updated (affordance) within the gravitational constant.
The outline of our dance experiences (vitality affect) is rarely articulated or shared outside the dance itself.
This workshop proposes to explore this double articulation.
- On the one hand, the affective dimension of dance experience (tuning condition) at the heart of CI practice and dance improvisation.
- On the other hand to take a closer look at the polyphonic, polyrhythmic and dissensual nature of this "multimedia" experience which does not belong to any of the subjects but which is a property of the event, of the relationship.
To this end, we will try to bring together the practice of improvisation and the micro-phenomenological interview method in order to create a device where the dance explicates and the explicitation dances.
This device is based on 3 components that we identify both in the improvised dance and in the micro-phenomenological maintenance:
- shared attention (share
d epoche)
- creation of meaning in dialogue (dialogical sense-making)
- a shared concern for the event
We want these 5 days to be thought in immersion and as an opportunity to question the boundaries between space / time of life and work; where the structure of the workshop emerges from our interactions and upsets our habits of transmission, knowledge and learning.
