Purim is a Jewish festival built on the back of even older stories. The character of God never shows up by name in the scroll told during Purim. The satirical tale, told every year, shows how swiftly people can switch from being powerless to powerful, and back again. So it is in the World around us today: we hope there is justice and order in the World, yet we know that bad things happen to good people all the time. We could laugh or cry. Purim (and all her sister festivals) ask us to laugh, not from joy exactly, but at the absurdity of humans imagining the Cosmos is under our control. So what happens when all sensible order unravels?
