As was common in African diasporic practices, tango was carefully fused with surrounding cultures and yet retained an insurgent character which has animated generations of musicians and dancers to break both social codes – and tango’s own. In Argentina, the diaspora did not survive to nurse its child. In the United States, a different history allowed the slaves’ songs to nurture blues, jazz, and hiphop. Jazz and tango meet periodically as two great arts, great-grandchildren who have all but forgotten the daring which nevertheless still speaks directly to our spirits. Tonight we draw attention to the constitutive relations between the circle of community and the divine spark of improvisation. Michael Rühl: An diesem Abend möchte ich als DJ insbesondere die Tangomusic spielen, die nach der goldenen Ära des Tango komponiert- beziehungsweise gespielt wurde, ich meine die Zeit von 1960 bis jetzt. Vieles davon wird im algemeinen nicht mehr oder nur selten gespielt. Das finde ich schade, denn es ist grossartige Musik. Vieles davon werde ich von orginalen Vynilos spielen und einiges auch von Schellackplatte. Wenn ich Saxofon spiele, kehre ich mein Inneres nach aussen, egal ob ich imporovisiere oder eine fremde Komposition spiele. Zur information: La payada (en Argentina, Uruguay, sur de Brasil y parte de Paraguay) o paya (en Chile) es un arte poético musical perteneciente a la cultura hispánica, que adquirió un gran desarrollo en el Cono Sur de América, en el que una persona, el payador, improvisa un recitado en rima acompañado de una guitarra. Cuando la payada es a dúo se denomina «contrapunto» y toma la forma de un duelo cantado, en el que cada payador debe contestar payando las preguntas de su contrincante, para luego pasar a preguntar del mismo modo. Estas payadas a dúo suelen durar horas, a veces días, y terminan cuando uno de los cantores no responde inmediatamente a la pregunta de su contendiente. Es un arte emparentado con el versolarismo vasco, la regueifa gallega, el trovo alpujarreño y el repentismo cubano. Este tipo de «discusión dialéctica» responde a un patrón que ha estado presente en un gran número de culturas, y forma parte de la tradición asiática, de las culturas griega y romana y de la historia del Mediterráneo musulmán.
