CUBAN☆FUSION's Annual Band Rotunda BYO BBQ @ Island Bay

For the fourth year running.. join us to celebrate summer on our home turf, literally. Here's the deal: - we provide the venue (well, WCC's Parks and Recreations does) - we provide the music and - we provide the electric BBQs (again WCC's Parks and Recreation does) to cook on and - everyone else brings food and drink to cook/drink/share as well as own picnic gear to eat and drink from and blanket to laze on between dances. Our aim is to leave nothing behind - no leftovers, no mess, no plastic especially. There's plenty of parking around the park and nearby, but would encourage use of public transport especially if you are planning to have a drink or two. The No 1 bus route stops and starts at Shorland Park. Also supplies can be picked up on way at Countdown in Newtown or New World in Island Bay. There is also a diary and fish and chip shop nearby. Be prepared to dance on grass and concrete… and do bring an extra layer just in case it gets cooler later in the day. Event will go ahead unless weather REALLY bad. We can dance and eat under the shelter of the Band Rotunda if need be. RAIN DATE: Will move event to Sunday 21 February if weather REALLY bad on Saturday 20 February.. Third option is Sunday 1 March. These are the only 2 dates/days we have free ALL summer, so hopefully we can make this work around the lovely Wellington weather! Also, just in case it's not obvious - this is a family and friends friendly event as set in a kids’ playground, so please don't hesitate to bring them along. BYO CHECKLIST: - something to throw on the BBQ to share - snacks/salads to share - something to drink (there's filtered water on site) - picnic gear - plates, utensils, cups, blankets - sun protection - hat, cream, shade - togs and towel (for the brave) - comfortable shoes to dance on concrete / grass - something warm should wind get up/for when sun starts to fade WANTED: Volunteers to man/lady the BBQs. First year the Cuban Ambassador Mario Alzugaray Rodríguez did it.. bit embarrassing, Second year Cherie Trujillo and Amber Walters took over. Third year Amber Walters (again) kicked it off and Roberto Rodriguez and Grant Major finished it off.. Who will it be this year? LOCATION: The Band Rotunda in middle of Shorland Park, corner Reef Street and The Esplanade, Island Bay So why are we holding this event in Island Bay you might ask? Well, for several reasons. This is where CUBAN☆FUSION is now based. We moved here August 2017. Island Bay a.k.a. Island Bay Little Italy is CF's Co-Founder Rosina's ancestral home.. in NZ at least. Rosina's (and Rafael's) son Sjaak/Chico is the 5th generation of Strombolani descendants to live in The Bay.. since my Great Grandparents settled on The Parade with their family of five at about the time the event photo was taken circa 1930s.. Also the Band Rotunda is such an obvious and underutilised venue for an event... and has lots of history and character... and the park has free and fantastic BBQs and lots of space for people to spread out, dance and play.
