Cubaton with Movimiento at Dancenorth

Movimiento director Bernadette Ashley will be bringing a bit of Havana to Dancenorth for all of Term Two [ten weeks] as part of their community dance program, on Wednesdays at 6pm to 7pm. Cubaton is a relatively recent music genre blending Salsa and AfroCuban Rumba with Reggaeton (latin hiphop). The dance mixes Salsa solo footwork (known as 'Suelta') with Reggaeton (latin hiphop) moves and isolations. Regardless of your gender, age, previous dance genres, or if you're a beginner with no dance experience, you'll gain something from this class! Due to renovations at the School of Arts, Dancenorth is temporarliy based at C2, entered from the pit lane side of the Civic Theatre complex in Boundary Street. There's plenty of parking! Bernadette Ashley has been dancing salsa since 2002, and has taught in Townsville since 2004, initially with Danielo Cuda at La Fiesta, and at her own school Movimiento since 2011. She developed a strong cultural affinity on her first visit to Cuba in 2006, and has been back for further dance training and cultural immersion in 2013 and 2016, as well as attending dance festivals in Australia and learning with national and international teachers. While Bernadette's greatest experience is in Cuban dance styles, (Salsa, Rueda, Son, Rumba, Cubaton) she also dances Bachata (Dominican Republic), Kizomba (Angola/Cape Verde), Zouk (Brasil) and Tango (Argentina). As well as the obvious physical and mental health benefits of movement, Bernadette is also a proponent of dance as a catalyst for community building and social connectivity.
