D-Fusion 8 17: Blues InFused Dancing at the DMA!

D-Fusion is Dallas' very own monthly fusion dance taking place every 3rd Friday! This month we're going on a field trip to the Dallas Museum of Art to dance to live music from local musicians, and immerse our art (dance) within the broader contexts of visual and musical art! Happy Hour Performance featuring The Roger Boykin Trio 6:00 p.m., Atrium Kick off the evening with blues standards performed by The Roger Boykin Trio, featuring Roger Boykin on piano and guitar, George Anderson on bass, and Andrew Griffith on drums. Late Night Main Stage featuring Andrea Dawson 8:00–9:30 p.m., Atrium Listen to some classic blues as Andrea Dawson serenades you with her impressive range and mastery of musical styles. Her ability to sing blues, folk, R&B, jazz, and even rock is the reason she was crowned “The Sassy Soulstress of the Blues” after performing for many years in Dallas Performance in the Galleries with Roger Boykin 9:30 p.m., Level 4 Landing Dallas music legend Roger Boykin will serenade you with the blues as you stroll through the American Galleries. Late Night After Hours Showcase featuring Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat 10:45–11:30 p.m., Atrium End your night with Jim Suhler’s ferocious guitar skills, songwriting, and smooth vocals with his band Monkey Beats. The Dallas-based group is known for its no holds barred approach to blues-inspired rock ‘n’ roll and roots music. The band has worked with noted producers Terry Manning (ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, Stax records, etc.), and Jim Gaines (Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan) and Grammy Award–winning producer-songwriter Tom Hambridge. FAQs: WHAT IS "FUSION" DANCE? Fusion is partner dance genre-bending and/ or genre-blending. Each dance is influenced by the partners' movement background, informed by the music, and guided by the partnership. Maybe it'll look more like zouk, maybe west coast swing, maybe contact improv or tango, kizomba, or ballroom, maybe it'll look like partnered tai chi or yoga-- that's the fun in finding out! "Do you like being dipped?" "Are you comfortable with close embrace connection?") -You may ask anyone for a dance, anyone may ask you for a dance. An invitation is not an obligation; you may decline any offer, and anyone may decline your offer--but please be kind. ATTIRE? -Wear what's comfortable for you to dance in, dressy or casual, dance shoes, socks, or barefoot. -Dress and accessorize in a manner that accommodates your dance style. Love fast turns? Avoid single-tail hair braids. Wanna get into partnered acro or contact improv? Stretchy athletic wear is your friend, dangly jewelry is your annoying great aunt. Want to dance with more formality? Dress more formally-- that's cool too! OTHER HELPFUL TIPS? -If you don't know your dance partner, ask about their dance background to see if you have any commonalties. Maybe it's not even dance-- maybe you both practice martial arts or like rock climbing. -If you'd like to hear some different music, just have a friendly chat with the DJ, and be specific about what you want to hear.
