“Dance Between Water and Land” Koh Phangan, Thailand 4 to 7 September 2025 A four-day immersion into Contact Improvisation (CI) in the dance studio and the sea. This intensive teaches a comprehensive set of skills for contact improvisation in water, making it as diverse as CI on land, while also giving a new perspective for contact improvisation in the dance studio. It is now finally ready to be introduced in Thailand. The island of Koh Phangan has perfect beaches for dancing contact improvisation in the water. The sand is clean, the water is warm and calm, and the depth increases gradually, making it possible to play differently at each depth level. Weather-wise, September is the best time for this program: it’s not too hot, and the sea temperature is very pleasant. There are also not too many tourists, and accommodation prices are very affordable. In this course, we will learn how to make our dance in the water diverse and creative by studying movement principles such as counterbalance, spiraling, movement from the center, and momentum. We will also play with partially submerged bodies and learn examples of movement patterns in water, which will give us ideas on how to bring the diversity and creativity of dancing in water closer to dancing CI in a studio. Approximately 70% of our body is water in different forms. When we come to the studio after being in the sea, we can naturally connect to the fluid aspect of movement, which makes a more gentle and effortless dance possible. This course is for people with any level of experience. Swimming skills are not required, as the practice will take place where the depth allows us to stand. As a child Ivan practiced acrobatics & football. From 2005 was practicing yoga & meditation. At the same time, Ivan started to learn different schools of western and eastern philosophy and spiritual teachings. Since 2007 to 2009 studied martial arts. Ivan has been trained in different modern dance styles: butoh, hip-hop, popping, house, jazz funk, contemporary dance, tango. Other movement practices that he studied: Ideokinesis, Axis Syllabus & Movement Culture, Flow Arts & Physical Theatre. For the first time Ivan encountered contact improvisation in 2013, and has been teaching contact improvisation since 2018. He has been facilitating Contact Improvisation in Russia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong & South Korea and organizing international courses and residencies.
