Dance Temple with AguaMayyim

Thursday night Dance Temple featuring AguaMayyim (Franky & Rose) + MichaelDavid teaching contact improv. Tickets: $20-$30 (sliding scale) at the door. Please join us and support our continued efforts to bring beautiful music, visuals, and community happenings to Santa Cruz. This event will start with an opening class taught by MichaelDavid. This will be a consent focused, all levels contact improv class. We will move seamlessly into a 2 hour dance with AguaMayyim. We will start with lots of downtempo bass, flowy, saucy vibes for those that appreciate practicing contact dance. If you do not practice contact dance, you are still absolutely welcome to arrive at 8 for the main set, and dance your own solo journey. This is open to ALL. After the dance we will have a short integration and then time to connect with community. We encourage you to arrive by 7 and stay until the closing for the full journey and experience, but you are welcome to arrive anytime. He will begin with setting the container with clear agreements for how we will engage with each other. Please arrive on time for this. After setting the agreement field and checking in with each other, MichaelDavid will lead us through exercises to practice engaging and disengaging, tracking your Yes and continuing to advocate for yourself, weight sharing/lifting/rolling/level changes/falling etc. The experience will be crafted so as to be engaging for all experience levels. You can choose your level of participation with any activity and practice being in your Yes. MichaelDavid has been a student of contact improv dance for 13 years. He has had the opportunity to study with several fine teachers including 2 years of study with Nita Little. He has found contact improv to be a laboratory space to explore connection to self and other. In this space he believes we can discover the deeper Yes of our natural movement as well as the deeper Yes of what engagements we want with others, how to release what we don’t want and move toward what we do want, fluidly engaging and disengaging and engaging. DANCE GUIDELINES: THE DANCE FLOOR IS A SACRED SPACE. We try to keep a silent container on our dance floors to encourage participants to stay with the dance without distraction. All bodies, movements & emotions are welcome during our dances as long as your actions hold respect for those around you. There will be areas where you can talk and connect with community outside the main dance floor area. 1. We Dance Without Words - to drop into a meditative state with the dance. 2. We dance barefoot - (shoes are ok if needed for medical reasons!) 3. The 418 is a Drug & Alcohol free venue
