About this Event
Dance Yourself Stupid
Tutor: Dorothy Max Prior aka Dorothy's Shoes
Date: Saturday 5 May, 11am – 5pm
From the Clown Can Can to the Egyptian Sand Dance and beyond – a one-day taster workshop in eccentric, comic and stage dance.
Open to everyone – actors, clowns, dancers, and anyone else who fancies a bit of dotty dancing!
Following a sell-out successes at the London International Mime Festival 2018, this one-day workshop explores the many and various possibilities of comic and popular dance – investigating the vaudeville tradition, and exploring the potential of many different dance forms in the creation of comic numbers.
We'll work on classic eccentric and comic dance routines, such as those popularised by Laurel & Hardy, and the legendary Wilson Keppel & Betty; explore a number of popular dance rhythms such as Charleston, Tango, Jazz, or Mambo and investigate how these can be used for theatrical or comic effect;; and subvert well-known dance traditions such as the Can Can and Saturday Night Fever, giving them a comic twist.
Course tutor Dorothy Max Prior is a choreographer, writer, director and dance teacher with over thirty years experience in the performing arts. She is a co-director of The Ragroof Players, and also makes work under the name Dorothy’s Shoes. She works across the UK and in many countries around the world, most recently in Mexico for Ficho Festival of Circus & Cabaret; and in Brazil directing circus theatre show The Twins, and launching the Cabare Excentrico troupe in Sao Paolo.
