This Thursday marks “Day 1” of Stockholm Pugliese Weekend, and we knew no better way to welcome everyone than by throwing a Tango House Party—with three wonderful co-hosts: ✨Michael Lavocah, Dag Stenvoll & Jenny Hellgren✨ from Norwich (UK), Bergen (Norway), and Umeå (Sweden), respectively. We’ll begin with a glorious 1.5 hours of sitting by the campfire (metaphorically), in conversation with world-renowned tango music experts—𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘵 at telling stories. Most TDJs in Stockholm this weekend have already blocked their calendars for it. Yet, this event is for everyone interested in tango music—especially those ready to take the next step as seasoned milongueros who understand what the firekeepers (DJs) are doing. As usual, there are two parts to the story. ******* 🧉 Part 1 | DJ conversation: “Tango by Maestro” 🕕 𝟭𝟴.𝟬𝟬-𝟭𝟵.𝟯𝟬—In the Mood for Pugliese The big instrumentals of Pugliese’s mature period (Gallo Ciego, Emancipación, Nochero Soy and others) are rightly famous, creating a dramatic highlight to a milonga, but with four great vocalists and a recording career spanning five decades, this radiant drama is only one of many moods that Pugliese’s music offers us. There are moments of even greater intensity and density, as well as moments of pure and sweet romance; there is melting tenderness, violent beauty, and even greater complexity, modernity and sophistication. ✨Michael Lavocah✨ in conversation with ✨Dag Stenvoll✨ his partner in the ‘Tango By Year’ show (a lifeboat for the worldwide tango community during the pandemic), will open up our musical horizons. Welcome! 🧉 Your hosts: Jenny, Michael, Dag, Giorgio, Mario and Sujy A B O U T ________________________ 🌹 DJ Jenny Hellgren Jenny helped build up the tango scene in Umeå and Skellefteå in the late 90s and early 2000s. She is committed to tango in many ways; as tango DJ, tango teacher, tango traveller and of course, dedicated close-embrace dancer in both roles. Her aspiration is to play golden age music that encourages people to dance, enjoy themselves and possibly discover something new within the well-known. Her music is regularly heard and appreciated in Umeå as well as in Stockholm, and she been invited to play at events in Denmark, Norway and Latvia. 🌹 Michael Lavocah & Dag Stenvoll During the pandemic, Michael and Dag Stenvoll ran a free online Zoom show called “Tango By Year”. In each show, Dag chose a year and the tracks to play, and Michael spoke about them. The twist: Michael knew only the year before the show, not the selections. Over 18 months they did 39 shows, more than 130 hours, covering 1927-1955 – the core years of tango – with a few bonus programmes. The seed of Pugliese Weekend was planted toward the end of the Covid era, during a road trip with a Norwegian friend who put on the podcast "Tango by Year" (we recommend googling it right now if it’s new to you). We sat for hours, surrounded by changing landscapes, listening to tango from the Golden Age—year by year (literally)—and to the conversations between the two co-hosts. We were so excited, I immediately ordered two copies of the book "Tango Stories" (by Michael) and began devouring the rest. In 2023, Tango Norte invited the típica orchestra La Juan D’Arienzo to Stockholm. Some of us volunteered to help—on one condition: “Well, if Michael Lavocah is joining us…” And that’s how Stockholm D’Arienzo Weekend 2023 happened. That’s also why Pugliese Weekend is happening now. It’s been imagined as a multidimensional book, written in real time, where we come together to share, explore, and write stories with all our senses.
