Intro to Axis Syllabus for Dancers and Movers
taught by Daniel Bear Davis
The Axis Syllabus offers a groundswell of relevant and specific information into healthy movement habits for moving humans living in a dynamic world. In this dance workshop, we will look at details of our own anatomy, refined over thousands of years of evolution, to gain clues about how to move in collaboration with our own fascinating design. Through specific inquiry, observation, and practice, we seek to increase our kinetic capacities while reducing the risk of injury and repetitive strain. Through a combination of choreographed motifs and focused improvisations, we will build tools for dynamic alignment, resilience, and informed choice.
Classes are open to all levels. There will be a range of adaptations to proposed movement motifs so learning can be supported for beginners and seasoned dancers simultaneously. Collaboration with the underlying patterns of our design will benefit anyone who lives in a body.

ABOUT DANIEL BEAR DAVIS
Daniel has been a Certified Axis Syllabus teacher since 2013. The information and learning from AS are integrated into his contemporary dance, contact improv and Acrobatic Stilt practices and teaching. He has taught internationally in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and throughout North America. He is currently full time faculty in the Theater, Film, and Media Studies Program at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
He says, “I teach Axis because, as a young dancer, I had countless injuries stemming from improper training. The AS has transformed my body, greatly reducing frequency of injury and opening more physical possibilities for creation and play. Whether teaching physical skills or compositional practices, my intention is to foster tools for informed choice and increased possibility.”
Daniel’s performance work has been presented at the Imagining Bodies Symposium in Estonia, Performaticá in Mexico, The San Francisco International Arts Festival (Jewels in the Square), SoWat Now and Looking Left Festival in California, and at the SEEDS Festival and E|MERGE Residency at Earthdance (MA). He has been blessed with opportunities to perform with Guillermo Gomez Peña, Nita Little, Nancy Stark Smith, Live Art Installations, Felix Ruckert, Kira Kirsch, Erika Tsimbrovsky, Scott Wells, Krista DeNio and many other inspiring body/minds.
