About this Event

Celebrate the rich cultural legacy of Zouk and Brazil music and dance. The DC Zouk Festival is the premier Zouk Music and Dance event of the year for the Washington DC region, bringing you total immersion for 3 nights and 2 days of non-stop excitement with our unsurpassed array of workshops, dance productions and live entertainment. THE BIRTH OF DC'S ZOUK FESTIVAL For one weekend only you'll have the opportunity to choose workshops from a list of Zouk dance instructors both nationally and internationally renowned. You'll enjoy instructors teaching at all levels of Zouk dance covering the latest styles and traditional methods, rhythm and historical perspectives honoring the multi-cultural origins of this dance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHAT IS ZOUK? Also known as "Zouk-Lambada", Brazilian Zouk is a sensual partner dance with origins in Lambada (aka "the Forbidden Dance") and danced to "Zouk" rhythms made popular in the French Caribbean. These days the dance has developed deeply with influences in classical dance, street dance and other partnered styles (Forro, Samba, Salsa, etc.). The music that we dance to has also evolved with the introduction of various genres of music (i.e. hip hop, R&B, pop) that have similar rhythmic structures and/or a danceable lyrical component. Zouk is known best for flowing motion and upper body movement (i.e. body waves), giving rise to the woman’s dramatic “hair flicks”. The dance is close with an intimate partner connection. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHAT'S GOING DOWN?
