But First...
Dancing to the rhythms of "Salsa" is NOT about doing "Turn Patterns or Combinations", is all about mastering ours basics and learning how to feel, play and understand the music. One of the biggest mistakes salsa rhythm dancers do now days, is to avoid learning how to dance "footwork". Not knowing "footwork" and learning how to partner dance first, is like learning how to run before crawling. After many years of dancing, If you find yourself having a difficult time leading/following, keeping up with the timing, getting out of rhythm or not knowing when to start when the music starts; then maybe those are symptoms that something is missing.
By experience, I believe that learning how to dance by ourselves allow us to interpret dance and music differently because we have to become creative. Learning how to dance by ourselves, helps us to discover where our balance is, connects us with the music and find our inner rhythm, allow us to master our timing for different dances, improves our technique, muscle memory, speed, styling, body isolations and most important our ability to "freestyle" and move around the dance floor in a heartbeat without hesitation. Learning how to do footwork, also challenges us to compete with ourselves, allow us to build self-confidence and expands our artistic knowledge; making us feel more natural and complete on the dance floor.
Even thought this may be a hobby for some of you, dancing in general is like any other sport. We need to learn how to play the game and do things right from the beginning before we can actually get out on the field and play. Or if we want to compare ourselves with a musician, we need to be in tuned with ourselves and learn how to play our instrument before we could play with a band!
We should all consider footwork and shines as a priority, not as an option. The more footwork we learn, the bigger vocabulary we have to transfer later on when we dance with a partner and also when we go to socials, workshops or salsa congresses. So, if you haven't consider to learn footwork this is your opportunity to do so.
Here are some questions that we should ask ourselves before we decide to step on the dance floor:
Do I know my basics well? How many basics do I know? Do I understand the musicality? Am I on timing? Am I "Dependent" or "Independent" as a Dancer? Am I good enough to lead/follow someone? What do I consider myself: Beginner Intermediate, Advance or Professional? Am I knowledgeable about what I'm dancing? Do I know the meaning or history of what Im dancing? Does my Instructor provided me with such knowledge? Have I ever challenged my Instructors? Do I ask questions? Whats Salsa? Is Salsa a dance or a rhythm? Whats Musicality? Do I understand my body or where my balance is? How much technique do I know? Can I dance without doing a simple turn pattern? Do I dance on the spot or move around the floor? Can I let go of my partner and freestyle? What should I do if my partner let me go? Should I dance with someone else, if I don't know how to dance by myself? Should I learn how to crawl, before I run or vise versa? Whats my biggest fear on the dance floor? Have I questioned myself or do I know it all? Do I know how to freestyle at all? How confidence Im to let go and be Free on the dance floor?
If you have any doubts or don't know how to answer some of those questions, Ill be here to answer some of those questions and provide you with the proper knowledge to help you understand the importance of those questions.
