About this Event
Summertime...and the swinging is easy with DJ Nomad (Lawrence Chan) spinning tunes for us this week!
Happy birthday to vocalist Helen Humes born June 23, 1913, who started out singing the blues as a teen before joining Count Basie's band (you can hear her on 'Thursday', Rhythm City's unofficial theme song). In the 50s she turned to jump blues and R&B, bridging the gap between big-band swing jazz and rhythm and blues. She said of her work: "I'm not trying to be a star! I want to work and be happy and just go along and have my friends – and that's my career."
