About this Event

Two DJs this week: DJ NoTaters 🚫🥔(Chloe Nguyen Tran) and Monsieur O 👨🏻‍🏫(Jean-Michel Oblette). THIS IS A 100% POTATO-FREE EVENT. "Now, come and give yourself a treat Watch these babies shake their feet What they're doin'? They're doin' the Suzie-Q!" Happy birthday to pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader Lil Hardin Armstrong, born February 3, 1898 in Memphis, Tennessee! Hardin was taught hymns, spirituals and classical music as a child, later graduating from historically Black college Fisk University, before getting a job as a sheet music demonstrator at a music store in Chicago - if you were looking to buy music, she would sit at the piano and show you what the piece sounded like. Lil Hardin joined King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band (pictured above), and was instrumental in helping Louis Armstrong (who became her husband) assert himself in the band and go out on his own. She is credited with many compositions like Let's Get Happy Together, Doin' The Suzie Q, and Struttin' With Some Barbecue... ADMISSION • FREE for Intro to Swing students • $5 for all other RCP students • $10 at the door.
