About this Event
South Bay is excited to host Don Neely! Come dance on our beautiful wooden floor, and enjoy music by some of the best musicians in town!
Don Neely is a highly regarded bandleader and multi-instrumentalist, best known as the founder of the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra. Neely and his orchestra have performed at major events in San Francisco, including opening night balls for the San Francisco Opera, Symphony, and Ballet, as well as various jazz festivals and clubs across the United States and internationally. They've also had long-running engagements at famous SF hotels like the Mark Hopkins on Nob Hill, the Fairmont and bay area legend Turk Murphy's famous Earthquake McGoon's.
Don and his band have been featured in numerous national and local television, newspaper and magazine stories. He starred in an hour-long PBS television special, a superb production recreating an authentic Art Deco night club, with their San Francisco fans making up the dancing audience. Don Neely has made sixteen recordings as a bandleader, all featuring authentically performed vintage Jazz and Swing.
Chris Ortega is leading this month's dance workshop, featuring moves from Collegiate Shag to spice up your dance game!
Collegiate Shag is a partnered swing dance that originated in the 1920’s and 30s and is typically done to faster tempo music (180-250+ beats per minute). It is an energetic dance with relatively upright posture and features hops, kicks, and creative footwork rhythms.
