He was a singer in Francisco Lomuto’s orquesta in the 1940s. I rather like Lomuto, although it’s not usually a name which comes up when people are talking about their favourite orquestas. Lomuto in the 1930s is rhythmic and simpler sounding, some may say beginner friendly (though it doesn’t mean that it is boring to experienced dancers!). His 1940s recordings are beautifully lyrical with great subtlety, while maintaining rhythmic clarity. To me, Lomuto is a versatile ingredient which gives body to the flavour of the night. Like onions in stew. Alberto Rivera delivers gorgeous emotionality to this era of Lomuto recordings.
